Comments (5)Jt Some questions please. What is your location? What size home living area? What size furnace and eff are you replacing? What size AC are you replacing? I would like to know the exact mdl number evap coil for each quote. What thermostat is proposed for the Carrier quote? That is a big difference between the 96% eff Carrier furnace and the 80% eff Trane furnace-both 60 K input. That would be about 56 KBTUs output on the Carrier and about 48 KBTUs on the Trane. Not insignificant. I don't care for some shortcuts that homeowners make particularly on reusing linesets and using existing thermostats that shortchange a nice furnace's operational capability. Post back with the info requested. IMO...See MoreNeed advice re replacing HVAC unit in 1200 sq foot condo

Comments (3)I am also in central NJ so I am familiar with the climate and utility costs. Is your gas and electric supplied by PSE&G? If it is then at today's prices a 95%+ efficiency furnace is going to be cheaper to heat your house then a typical air sourced heat pump. These contractors need to work out the numbers and prove it to themselves before they make claims about saving energy. Be careful about the NJ clean energy program. You are forced to buy things in order to qualify for the state rebates. It appears you are getting a great deal but in reality you may be over paying. Do you need a new hot water heater? I see people on this forum replace good hot water heaters just to qualify for a higher rebate. Be aware that a power vented model will not operate during a power outage. The energy savings compared to a conventional hot water heater are small. It is something to consider in making your decisions. If your attic has R30 insulation, then adding 3 additional inches is not going to make much impact on energy costs. I am surprised the program would allow this. I suggest you forget the heat pump and put the money towards a 2-stage AC. You will get better humidity control and be more comfortable. If you are still shopping for a good HVAC contractor, then send me message with your email address. I can recommend a good Carrier dealer who is located in Mercer county....See MoreWhat do you think of this HVAC quote?
Comments (14)Hydro air systems are not very common. I have no experience with them and they are rarely discussed on this forum. How much do you spend annually on fuel oil for heating and domestic hot water? I imagine it is a lot of money. Have you considered abandoning the hydro air and installing a heat pump in it's place? The installation costs should be comparable in either case, but I would think you would save money on heating costs and you could get a matched system with a 10 year parts warranty. It think a 2 ton AC for 1500 sq feet on the third floor seems a bit undersized. Was the old AC able to keep up on a hot day? SEER ratings are for a matched system of condenser, coil, and air handler. If go with the First Company hydro air handler and the Carrier condenser, you will have a mismatched system. That means the SEER rating is unknown. If you spend the extra money on the 2-stage condenser it will be more efficient but you won't know by how much. The 2-stage condenser is great for controlling humidity. But be aware that in a 2-ton condenser, the low and high stages are about 1.3 and 2 tons. It is not until you get to the 3 and 4 ton sizes that the differences are more noticeable. It is something to think about....See MoreNorah Mahon
