any opinions on caging my parlor palm?

I am trying to rescue a parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans) we've had in the library for almost 15 years. In addition to an outbreak of spider mites (yes, I know - I should compost it - but I'm experimenting here) this poor palm suffers from very splayed stems and grows out instead of up. I got the bright idea to corral in its stems with a cut of wire tomato cage.

Now I'm wondering if the cage will keep the stems too close together and restrict healthy air flow or normal growth? has anyone tried this or have any opinions about it? Should I leave it free to flop about?
