Lighting Design Dilemma Bathrooms

replacing double vanity and new flooring in 90's bathroom that currently has boxed fluorescent lighting. Question is what to do with the boxed lighting..remove it? leave it and fill cavity and install recessed lighting, or partially fill and frame inside with crown molding then add recessed or other type of lighting? If box is removed, the ceiling is sloped down to the mirrored wall. oh we will be removing the mirror too. Help!!

Without seeing the space, my first inclination would be to gut the bathroom to the studs and begin from point zero, including removing all the lighting. But what does your designer say?

All right, here is where I'm at now. I've abandoned the idea of taking room from my closet. I really like the space in there, and I think we've found a layout that will work within the existing room, while minimizing plumbing changes where possible. In the pic below, the vanity will stay here it currently resides, but we will add a second sink. The toilet remains NEAR it's current location, but actually gets enclosed... It is a short room, but meets code for 21" in front of the toilet. An enclosed toilet is a MUST HAVE. Currently, we have a large corner tub and small fiberglass shower. They are reversed in position from what you see on the plan below. In this plan we get a much larger tiled-in shower, with a glass door. I am hoping for two shower heads, and room for two people showering at the same time. The differences in the floor plans shown below are the size of the tub. You can see one uses a 5'6" tub, one a 5' tub. I lean towards the larger tub, but in doing so we lose width on the shower. The shower gets used daily, the tub a couple times a week for the kids, maybe once a month for a grown up. Thoughts?

A couple of things. With regard to the chimney stack, I recommend posting on the Remodeling forum of GW. With the existing closets in your bedroom and the guest room, could you totally take that space over and use part if it for an enlarged bathroom and the other part, a walk in closet oriented the other direction? The guest bedroom could have a closet built on the wall behind the toilet. Maybe thats workable maybe not. I would draw out all your dimensions on graph paper. Then taking tracing paper cut out to scale furniture (beds, vanities, nightstands, etc) and bathroom fixtures. Then place them around your rooms to see what fits and doesn't fit.

Yes agree with Sophie that plumbing moves and how far will add $$$. But I would far rather have inexpensive porcelain tile, and a great layout ..........than luxury finishes w/ layout "settled for". Bear in mind, CONTRACTORS differ. What may be an arduous task to one, is not to another. A contractor armed with a very skilled plumber sub can often solve issues at less expense than anticipated. Maybe your contractor doesn't like the idea of STRADDLING a couple of joists on an opened floor, getting pitch and soil pipe relocated, without wrecking a ceiling below and using a couple 45 degree elbows. At least further investigate, would be my advice. I have moved them ( loos) further than that ! An additional 10k expense over ten years is a grand a year for great vs. "meh" or inconvenient.

Oh dear, Kim. Just don't fall over in a dead faint when you get the demolition bill! That's a lot of tile. In a room that large, I would keep the tiled areas to only the wet areas. No matter how warm the color of the tile, it still looks cold to have that much hard surface. Here's some photos containing elements from the Craftsman style of your home. Some of these baths are much smaller than yours, but the ideas are there. The last photo is of a dual vanity with tower.

We removed a box light in our kitchen then repaired, textured and repainted ceiling. We used the electrical that was up there to hang pendants. In a bathroom, I'd probably put in recessed LED can lights. Or if you want a ceiling light fixture plus some can lights, that could work also. As long as you'll be messing with the ceiling, go ahead and put lights wherever you need them.

Do not trim out the box that will scream you used to have a box there remove it all redo the ceiling in a nice smooth finish and depending on the size of the sapce pot lights and some good lighting to do makeup at the vanity too. If you use all LED bulbs you could probably run all the lighting from one electrical box
