Help identifying rose, white shrub sold as Bolero, but maybe incorrect

Hi there!

My mom has had her Bolero for five years, see photos attached. it is a great roses and prolific. After seeing how beautiful her s was, i purchased two two.

I think the original Bolero may be incorrect! It was purchased from a reputable nursery, Gethesmane in Chicago, but the scent is very different from the newer two. my moms smells of anise, while mine are more fruity floral. mine also has larger flowers, the ones photographed smaller. All are planted in Chicago, but the smaller profuse blooms are amended with bedding from my moms chickens.

Any idea on if this is Bolero is much appreciated!

I have never grown Bolero so I truly don't know, but a lot of people on this forum do and I have never heard any of them describe the scent as anise. Hm, I hope more people chime in soon!

It so happens, Kim, the Zalud House in Porterville WAS on my list to visit this past year -- oh well. But, it's definitely still on the list, so this year. -- I see they are opening up again tomorrow. The strange history of the house itself is interesting (how about those paranormal tours), but I was also interested in seeing if "Shingled Raspberry" is still there, and what else, rose-wise. Congratulations on getting Oneto Home Saffron and Lady Roberts! Is that OHS in the pot in your photo? If so, it's already large for the variety, unless Anita's been growing it for years. I got Oneto Home Saffron from Vintage as a band in 2012, so I've been growing it for 9 years now. I totally agree with what Malcolm Manners says on HMF: "This is the slowest-growing rose I've ever grown." Mine is now 3' wide and 2' tall (in the ground, just measured it) and that's after a "spurt" of growth the past year or two. Its natural smallness seems so odd for a tea -- even the relatively diminutive and demure Madame Bravy was 4 1/2 - 5' tall or so. But, it's otherwise healthy and repeats well. Maybe I should try grafting it onto Fortuniana, see what happens...LOL. Actually, it's kind of nice to have a tea that's not going for world domination, for once. Lady Roberts was on my maybe-kill-for list for years and finally I got it year-before-last -- every bloom a heart-breaker, and my favorite color.

Hi Marlorena, There were a couple of threads a short while back about Filroses and importing their plants into the U.S.. I got some mixed messages about inspections and a quarantine that are required (or not). I am still totally mixed up, but my impression is that getting Filroses plants into, say, Canada, is a lot easier than into the U.S. Even Pickering in Canada has had recent troubles with U.S. red tape. I should contact Filroses and see what they say, but negative info about importing plant material has dampened my enthusiasm. Thanks so much for your comments, though. Ken, thank you for suggesting Summer Snow. It is definitely a rose I am unfamiliar with and it could be a possibility for the space. Rick, I remember Fair Bianca from over a decade ago when I first began growing Austin's. It is a very pretty little rose, but I have not seen it in commerce that much at west coast and Texas rose suppliers. I do not recall seeing it a D.A. either. Kate, thank you for the suggestions. I grew minis many years ago but do not now. Iceberg here is very common but it becomes way to large. The last Iceberg I grew was at least 6' in height. My climate is very arid, and thus there are no major fungal issues; just spider mites, aphids and the brutal summer heat for about 3 months. Seil, that is a good suggestion. I was not impressed with Marie Pavie, which was probably no fault of the rose, but my climate. There could be another polyantha that could fair better here. I will definitely conduct a HMF search.

Thank you all again - the ready responses were very pleasant to get, when I has pretty much lost hope of pinpointing this rose's identity. I do believe that Mrs. Herbert Stevens is it, not only because of her unique hardiness for a tea, but because in all my reading, she is the only white tea that repeatedly evokes comment about her silky soft petals. And (2), I've looked at many photos, and when white teas have coloring at the base it seems usually to be yellow, and more rarely outright pink, but she is the only one with that subtle fawn/flesh tone. But what was really persuasive is that she answers to the intuition I have always had in my gut - that it had to be a common, everyday variety and not a selection ordered or specially sought-out. Two postwar DP's like my parents would have had no resources of cash or time to squander, but they could have and WOULD have picked up Mrs. Herbert Stevens at the neighborhood Woolworth's, maybe because she reminded them of home. I'm not up to researching the Toronto market, but under the circumstances it naturally had to be one of the popular, readily available varieties of the era, which Mrs. Stevens appears to have been for a long time along the eastern seaboard. So I'm tickled pink to finally have an answer. I have to tell you, Nik, that it was an extra pleasure having a Greek gentleman provide the name, since she is going to be planted in the Greek-named and Greek-founded city of Simferopol where I now live. it's Mediterranean climate and alleged USDA zone 7 rating notwithstanding, this past winter temperatures went down to -30 Celsius and this week has been as hot as blazes. So we shall see. And yes, one last thing people often notice about her - she seems to glow.

I think your suspicions are well founded. A five year old Bolero should have hit its stride by now producing consistently, typical Bolero blooms, considerably larger blooms than seen on your mom's bush. My Boleros have larger blooms, the size of your Bolero's blooms.

Now, if mom's questionable Bolero bush is not getting a full sun exposure, that may account for the blooms smaller size, and the bush may be a genuine Bolero after all. Plus, light to no spring pruning will result in more but smaller blooms. Heavy pruning in spring, and Bolero's blooms will be a good bit larger, but fewer in number.

Going by fragrance comparisons is not always reliable in identifying a bush's variety. Just a slight difference in: location, soil type, fertilizer program, growing in shade or sun, watering, even time of day, etc., can result in fragrances of the same variety varying considerably.

Aren’t there a couple of different roses out there with the name “Bolero”? Could this be the issue? I have 3 Boleros from two different sources. All 3 of mine look like yours, not your mom’s. Lisa

When you say anise , my first thought was Madame annisette. I’ve not grown it in a cold climate , and mine climbs . So I’m not sure that’s the right idea then .. another it could be is earth angel .

I could be wrong on both but look them up snd compare .

it was not pruned in the spring, i will have her whack it back next spring and see if it has larger blooms. if anything, mine is in less sun..

Lily, I grow Madame Anisette and the bush form is much different, MA also climbs here in z5b/6a.. the flower form is also more rounded in the imposter bolero.

both are beautiful! highly reccommend Bolero, either one lol..

I do think Bolero (Meidelweis) is shade tolerant. Mine is 3yr old, own-root, and planted in a part sun spot (4hr sun). It's still full of blooms. My favorite white rose. Flower size is about 3in to 3.5in. Photo taken in early Aug.

If you look Bolero up on Help Me Find, https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/plants.php?searchNmTyp=5&searchNm=bolero&rid=3926&sbSearch=SEARCH&tab=1 you will see hybridizers have been giving their roses this name for a long time. The ones currently sold in nurseries are all probably the floribunda, Mouchotte/Meilland, 2004. Your mother's Bolero could be one of the others. Or, it could have been mislabeled.

@smilingspring it looks like Earth angel to me. EA has smaller blooms, but is a constant bloomer for me
