overwintering canna tubers - best method?
Comments (19)We got some free cannas last spring and they multiplied like crazy. We have over 200 mostly huge tubers which we have dug out of the ground and shaken most of the dirt off of. We want to save them because we have a place where they will look spectacular next year. Obviously they are going to take up a lot of storage space - overwintering in dirt in pots is out of the question. We don't have a cool dry place, however. Our choices are: attached garage that seldom freezes but gets into the 30's many times in the winter; basement that is heated and has very few cool corners, but we might be able to tuck them away against an outside wall. Which is the better choice? And right now we have them just piled into milk crates and large plant pots. Will they rot so close together? Would all milk crates be OK? Should we lay them out somewhere to dry before we store them? I'm asking this here instead of the canna forum because you folks know Upstate! Thanks for any help you can give us first time canna planters....See MoreBest Methods Of Cleaning Brick and Vinyl Siding
Comments (3)Thanks Barbara, The windows are new, and because I had storm windows with the old wooden-sash windows before, the window frames were all repainted white (they were a horrid avocado green color, before!). I'm pretty sure it's the siding, because if you look at the corners of the house, there's white staining where the corner piece of the siding ends on both sides. Also, along the top row of vertical bricks, there seems to be a lot of build up. I'm just wondering if there are any plant-safe concoctions that will ease cleaning brick, and what the best way of cleaning brick and siding is. I guess there's always the pressure-washing method, but would I need to use a detergent to get this stuff off? Thanks, Nick...See MoreBest Exterior Colors for Orange Brick
Comments (6)If I were in your shoes, I would remove the shutters on the triple window. That style of window doesn't work with those type of shutters at all. In fact, I would then size all the rest of the shutters the right size (so they look functional even if they aren't). Take a look at this very brief article about the right and wrong size and location for shutters: https://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/residential-architecture-101-shutters/ Right size shutter example below and only placed on appropriate windows: Another example...See MoreSiding, roof, shutter colors on orange brick house
Comments (22)Thanks Maureen! I don't intend to paint the brick or porch. If we redo the porch in the future, we'd get a non-red color. As for the mulch, I'm definitely planning dark. Maybe a dark brown, maybe a black. I think cypress might pull too much of the red? Not sure. We also planted a row of tall white daisies all along the front of the porch to help break up the red. We were able to match the grays in person with Mastic Victorian Grey so that is what we have ordered. We will have shake style on the front gable and traditional horizontal siding on the gables on the sides and back. We need to finalize roof and shutter colors. I am about 80% sure we are going with the landmark pro moire black roof. I get what you're saying about the shutters, but there does appear to be discoloration behind them. I'm thinking board and batten style shutters in medium grey. Then I'll be looking into the trim and door painting. Thinking white trim (currently cream) and a bright tealy blue for the door....See MoreBasil
