A few late daylilies and general garden shots

I haven't taken too many pictures recently. It's either too hot to be out or I have been busy with other things. Here are a few daylilies still blooming.

TrueNorth Shy Fox belongs to our daughter. It seems to be vigorous enough and has tall scapes but I just don't care much for it. Lavender is just not my color. When I look at its picture in the database, I wonder if it is the correct plant. However, we have had a couple others that are slow to show their true color.

The next two are seedlings. Bob and I have a tough time with yellow seedlings. There are so many yellow daylilies that we feel it must be special to be introduced. An ordinary yellow just won't do.

We have hopes for this first one. It has great garden presence and a strong golden yellow color. It's on tall scapes with large flower. It is Up Against the Sun X Horns. This one was photographed after a morning rain,

This one is Fox Point X Raggedy Man.

Here are some other flowers blooming now in our garden.

The tropical hibiscus are getting going. They love the heat. This is 'Kona Improved'.

This is Tecoma stans 'Orange Jubilee'.

This is Erythrina bidwillii.

This is Vriesia retioflexa. The bloom spike (called a spike, not scape, in the bromeliad world) is pendant, not broken.

I quite like the 1st one, but I see why you wonder about it. I love the rich colors of the photo in the database too. I like your seedlings, especially the 1st one. The hibiscus is

I like your daughters daylily too. Nice girly pastel color..........I always enjoy seeing your tropicals. I grow the yellow Tecoma Stans "Gold Star" every year if I can get my hands on it. I've seen the orange one for sale too...........I'm impressed with the color of the Erythrina B (Coralbean). I've read about them before a bit, but wondered what to do with them in the garden. How large does yours get by the end of the season? Do you take yours into the greenhouse over winter?.....................Maryl

The really expensive ones are not necessarily better looking than the less expensive ones, just new or newer. Vickie- 125 feet of gardens, mostly daylilies, sounds divine. I sure do think that bed looks great. Tell your husband he has plenty of lawn left to mow. He should see my place were the used to be lawn is now what people refer to as my nice grassy paths.

Chris, I will be selling, but not directly out of my garden. I'll dig and divide the clumps that need it in the fall and line them out for spring sale. I have lots of people touring my garden during bloom season, so the sign will also make it easier for them to find me. :) Julie, Anns Talladega is a brighter rose red than mine. Don't know if it has something to do with the soil, temps or what but as I said, mine may look different next bloom season. We'll see. And, not only has it put up instant rebloom scapes, the one huge fan I planted in early March has now increased to 7 fans and is a small clump. How's that for fast? LOL Jan

Wow, Rita. Love those clump shots and Man of Sorrow-just perfect. The scapes are loading here but only Irish Elf, Stella Stars, Happy Returns and Little WInecup are out but Evelyn Kloris FLO yesterday. Love this one. cheers, lloyd. Guess my Sunday morning fix will be a short one. Rita, I didn't mention it earlier but I enjoyed your roses very much. Rose bloom is heavy here this year despite a few deer nibbles.

Whatever potting mix you buy make sure it is well drained. Miracle Grow without amendments has been too heavy in my experience. If you add some additional perilite to it (about a small hand full per gallon (10 inch) pot, it should work out in a temporary situation. When you get your bare roots or if you have seen them before note that they have "swollen" tubers and many of the roots are thick. That's a method the plant uses to store moisture. That translates into watching how much you water. Plants such as roses and many annuals have thin roots and require more moisture then daylilies do. Just keep the soil moist, not wet, especially until the new daylily settles and starts to put out small feeder roots. Until then over watering can cause root rot....I'm sure we'd all be interested in what you select and how it goes for you. Best of luck and watch out for the daylily bug. Once it bites you, you may never be the same. Look at all of us-lol.........Maryl

I enjoy seeing your tropicals. I do reallu like your Up Against The Sun seedling, i like the midrib on a yellow.

Those seedlings are standouts! And yes, definitely not the usual yellow!! I love the hibiscus and they are truly plants that appreciate the heat!

Maryl, our Erythrina grows in a pot and is taken in the greenhouse in the winter. Bob says that planted in the ground it would grow into a large shrub. Bob has a habit of trying to grow plants that are large shrubs or small trees in pots.

True North Star is quite delicate and lovely. Up Against the Sun X Horns is a beauty and all your tropicals are lovely.

I love lavenders, so True North Shy Fox looks beautiful to me. I looked up the registration photo which looks more purple than lavender. The first gold seedling really appeals to me, and your tropicals are so interesting!

Your daughters daylily is so pretty. It does show pink on my monitor but as a lavender it would be so pretty too. Your seedlings do very well and all the hard work you put into starting, planting and just the maintenance shows.
