Flooring Design Dilemma

Can you lay vinyl planks over ceramic tile?

Most of this smallish Fl. condo has 12"square ceramic tile flooring. It is flat, in good condition, but the color is beiges with a touch of rust through it. I prefer colors of gey, beige and blues. I am considering putting vinyl planks over the tiles, but have received mixed reports about doing this. Your thoughts?

If ok, what particular brand works best?

IMO no . First if just planks with no other material under them the tile will telegraph through the planks and if there is a material under the planks then chances are the floor will be too high and it will affect many things including appliances like the DWand doors not fitting .

I'm with LWO: tear out the ceramic. It will be less trouble than pulling out/reinstalling the baseboards, potentially cutting the door down due to increased floor height, and boxing in the vanity, making it difficult to change out down the road. A clean slate would be my preferred option.

With lots of expensive prepwork, and undercutting all the casings and doors, and losing height of the baseboards, yes, you can halfass the project and lay plastic over tile. It won’t be any cheaper than doing the project correctly and removing the tile. It’s likely to be more expensive, actually.

You can. Just make sure the floor is level. It likely will affect door thresholds since you will be raising the level of the floor. Hard to say for sure without knowing the specifics of your flooring.
