Moving from my Charming English Tudor to...?
Comments (21)Zen, I was so afraid of sounding critical when I wrote the first answer, but just because the previous owners obviously had money didn't mean they had taste--most likely they just threw money at someone and said 'spend it on what sells' and had no regard for the style of the house. You didn't seem that way, so I thought I'd give you some support. My own tastes have always been for late Victorian/Edwardian...followed closely by tudor...and my house just so happens to be an Edwardian, so I lucked out. My big drawback is not having all the resources I'd like to decorate the inside, so I've been forced to buy antique pieces (inexpensive) which fit the style I had in mind. My biggest expense was a nine-piece dining room set in Duncan Phyfe style I found a month before moving into the house--I later found a matching mirror to go with it! The hardest part about moving in was this: nearing midnight on a rainy Dec. 19th...trying to move an upright 1881 piano up planks on five front steps--it went into the garage for the winter until I could get sturdier and longer timbers to do the job, and clear the snow--but it survived fine once it was retuned. :) I can't wait to see your pictures of your things inside...and more of your garden--I am a big fan of roses, peonies and rhododendrons, and would love to see them in bloom!...See Moreentry door - which one?
Comments (6)Thanks! The style is.. late 70's retro? :) We have made a lot of updates so it now looks a bit more contemporary, but we are now working on the outside! I drove around our neighborhood and almost everyone who has updated their door has the style with two semicircles. I have to agree that I don't like the way it looks on a double door (single door looks nice). Unfortunately, I can't find too many choices with the rectangular styling that also allow for privacy. We don't want a lot of transparent glass, and none at eye level, so we are limited. If you all know of any other styles or companies that I'm missing, please let me know :) I will try to take and upload a picture tomorrow....See MoreEntrance Door Problem /caused by roof work
Comments (3)Thanks so much for your thoughts. The door (and door jamb) was finished on all exposed surfaces. But not on the side butted up to the wall studs. It may straighten itself out. I opened up the wall yesterday. Took out slightly wet (definitely not soaked, mostly dry - just 'slightly wet or damp) insulation. Whole thing is my fault of course. Didn't get the plastic far enough down from the roof - so water dripped onto the door. And the top of the door was 'open' since I am making that area be taller... Noticed yesterday that the actual door jamb seems to be 'soft'. No longer believe it is true wood. This is a fiberglass door, purchased from HD; and the door jamb seems to possibly be some sort of particle board. Might have to replace the Jamb, or just plane it down; or possibly might replace the door. AAAARRRRAGGGGGG!! Not pleased with what I did... Anyway - removed drywall, removed insulation, and am hoping for the best. Got to go, since I have to finish the roof! Thanks again to you both....See MoreBest Entry Door Red
Comments (9)Dawn, thank you for agreeing on the color!! I'm so excited to see how it looks when the new door is installed. Is it crazy to be excited about a door?? Hopefully it will be all complete by early next week. I will definitely ask about using a darker primer before painting. The door I purchased is pre-primed white. I painted my kitchen red and it took 6 coats. I don't blame your painter for being ill after 4 coats, but he/she should have known better :)...umm that is if the painter was a hired professional and not your DH or BF....See MoreJamie Schroeder
