My first African violet, please ID
Comments (1)Hi, Is a very lovely blue violet. I can see why you might get so much. Unfortunately, you are going to have a very difficult time figuring out what plant it is. In fact, it may be impossible to find out the name of it. I think I heard that there are at least 15,000 registered African violets. As you can imagine with that many violets there are several that are look-alikes so even if you find a name and picture that looks like your violet it may not be your violet. I would just be content with having a beautiful violet that has no name. All of us have at least one of those in our collection. Larry...See MoreQuestion on finding African Violets in Georgia?
Comments (9)Some of us prefer to know the name of the plant that we are getting. Every time I've seen things at box stores, including grocery stores, they are NOIDs. I could be an exception, but I don't want a plant that isn't properly identified with name. When someone ask for a semi or a mini, that means they know a bit about what they are looking for, and then adding the varigation on...they may not be happy with what they find in a box store. That's my take and I won't be offended if someone disagrees :) I love the varigation....on the leaves and in the blooms. I have moved away from solid things in my collection unless it is just way too impressive to turn down, LOL. For someone who just grows for the blooms and they don't care what the name is or fret about many of the other things to be concerned wtih -...clearance will probably make them happy. I always wonder "why" they're on clearance....pest, poor care, dying, etc. That's not something I want to risk bringing home to a collection of 270+ plants. I didn't understand the importance of those risk when I first started coming here until Fred and Barbara helped me to see it...then I experienced it and gained an even greater appreciation for the effort that needs to be put forth with my growing collection. dora...See MoreMy African Violet is dying!
Comments (28)Looks very good! Give then a little bit of water - like a teaspoon per pot - and get them covered. I presume the plastic pots have holes - so the extra water will run off. Keep the container in a light spot but away from the direct sun for a couple of weeks, you probably do not need to water during this time - and they should show the sign of growth soon. I....See MoreNeed help!! something wrong with my african violet! (Beginner in AV)
Comments (18)Mr. persistance! I love it! Work w inexpensive plants! Read, read, read. If you read and remember everything written, just on this forum. We will come to you for advice! Were I you, I would take the advice of some and create one single stable ingredient. An easy one is soil. You have to be able to eliminate at least one and preferable two key requirements for healthy plants. Soil, water, sun and food. Soil is easiest. Forget the exotics. A simple combination of perlite, vermiculite and peat will work great, 1-1-1. If it's available in your area, get the larger sized pellets. If not, a little horticultural charcoal can also work to loosen up your mixture. The idea being to create a loose mixture that will enable the roots of your plant to navigate freely throughout the pot. The next easiest is sun. Most indoor growers underestimate the amount of light needed to make these plants thrive. Sure, grandma grew AV's in her window and they probably bloomed once in a while. Thats not what we're doing. Read. You can determine exactly how many lumens it will take to provide adequate light for the square footage of the plant racks you have. Take appropriate steps. Once you have your soil and your light right. If the problem persists. Talk to you then....See MoreRosie1949
