small marks in Calacatta Miraggio countertops?

Hello, we recently had quartz calacatta miraggio counters installed. We noticed that there are small markings throughout the counter, especially in one area. They appear to be part of the stone slab itself. I did not see these In any photos I looked at when we were deciding on a quartz. The company we used told us that suppliers photoshop the pictures of their quartz and that if we had looked at a slab we would have seen this.

I feel like this is something I would have been aware of beforehand if this was true, but maybe I’m naive. Does anyone have experience with this type of quartz, and have these same markings?

You should have picked out your slabs this way you would know what you were getting. This is probably within the tolerance standards for the product.

Read the small print on the product. It probably includes a statement about inclusions being within the tolerance standards.

I've used silestone, cambria and pental and none of the colors/slabs I got had any markings. A friend recently installed cambria brittania warm and her slab does have some markings ... she calls them flies!

I also have honed Carrara marble on my island and love it. Everyone literally says wow when they walk into my kitchen. It's been installed for a few months, but have only been using it for the last month. I will admit that I have been babying it a bit, because I've been a little nervous about it staining. However, we have had some spills, drips, etc. and all have wiped right up and some have even been wiped later and it still is clean/stain-free. I don't think I have any obvious etching yet. Perhaps a small scratch or too, but I actually think that was done during the fabrication. I really do love it and I'm sure it won't "babied" as much as time goes on. It was sealed before and after installation. And I also clean it with just warm water and sometimes a little dish soap. Here is a picture before we moved in.

Hi Lisa. Happy fourth. We just had calacatta lux installed five days ago. Love the look. The horror stories on Houzz however are frightening. Water beads as was promised on counter when they sealed but edge near sink discolored from droplets. It did fade away in about an hour. Have you had any problems or did you have any staining? How was it processed? Ours came the day after it was cut and hoping down the road I don’t experience the edge stains. Anything you can add is very helpful. Thank you again. Your kitchen looks fantastic! After reading all this I’d be grateful to hear your experience. Tks!

Hey, barncatz: Every word of consolation and support helps. I'm trying not to rush the BS decision, but I know I'll feel much better about the countertop experience once I'm not staring at these sliver add-ons. One of my very early inspirations was Majra's kitchen. She, just like pipdog, used the mosaics for a lovely effect. And this is why I spent so much time last year looking at mosaics. But the mosaics seem a bit too busy (for me) up close. The rest of my kitchen is a work in progress. Lotsa 9-1/2' walls that will need to be painted again (probably a cool white -- the next challenge!), and a ton of natural light coming in. Baseboards, pantry door and trim are all semi-gloss white, and ceiling is white. Kitchen is open to the family room: taupe walls with a white fireplace/mantel -- white trim throughout the entire house. pippiep: Matching grout it is, then! One decision down. :) I've marked out the areas that will require BS tile. As you can see, it's not very expansive, and each one not very large. So, I need to find the correct scale/dimension tile that will look right in these spaces. I think using larger (3x6) tiles in a herringbone pattern will leave me with a bunch of chopped up squares in the bartop and cutout window areas. At least with the newest elongated hex pattern, most of the hexes will be retained.

kim k: So, so sorry I didn't reply to your post. The grit/counter issues were resolved, sort of, in that I settled for a crappy job and had to move on with my life. The ugly details here, if you care to see/read. Scroll down to 6/10/2017, 1:08 p.m. post for the small claims update. The entire process has paralyzed me to a point where we are still without a backsplash. I'm so gun shy about hiring anyone at this point, DH and I have been contemplating DIY. I just need to get up the energy to find someone local (a master/certified tiler) who will take the job. (If anyone in the Houston area can recommend someone, I'm all ears. No disrespect to handyman-types who might do a great job, but I don't want to take any chances.) Over the past 18 months, I've turned my attention to something more gratifying and soul fulfilling than being angry about my kitchen: butterfly gardening! Butterflies will not fail you, people. :) --------- It you have specific questions, kim k, perhaps I can at least provide my experiences (i.e., are you considering having macaubus/calacatta quartzite honed?). I took these pics just now -- in many parts of the stone, these bright white veins (some of which I pointed out above) are still quite visible. (Click to enlarge.) Pic #2: The white arrow points to a pit I noticed this morning. So, I grabbed a safety pin and lightly scratched at the bright white spot in Pic #1: it very easily powdered up and resulted in another little hole. I'm so apathetic about my tops, I don't care any more about creating another hole -- at least it's in a relatively unused part of the counter run (but not less visible, as the area sits right beneath a window). So, perhaps stone that arrives polished should not be honed/leathered by the fabricator on this end. Dunno. But that would be something my fabricator should have realized and perhaps warned against -- i.e., that veins might be opened up, exposing, what, resin? I'm assuming that's what the white powder is. If Karin is reading this, perhaps she can advise: a quartzite vein shouldn't be powdering like this, correct? Or is it possible this powder does naturally occur? I just wouldn't have thought ANYTHING in a slab of quartzite would be affected by the head of a safety pin. And for anyone wondering, Tenax Proseal sealant did the job: our tops are very resistant to both water- and oil-based liquids.

Also called ”resin pooling”. What your pics show don’t look nearly as bad as other Quartz pics we’ve seen on this forum. It may be difficult to do anything about it, as the fine print from the Quartz manufacturers allows resin pooling.

People on here will say that you’re supposed to see the Quartz slab in advance so that you can reject it if there is resin pooling. But that rarely is able to happen with Quartz. That is unlike granite, where it’s expected that the homeowner will see in advance the slab they are buying for their kitchen counters.

We just had the same quartz installed with the exact same markings/resin pooling. Unfortunately, some are right where you sit at our kitchen island and it's driving me crazy! I wish I would've known to inspect the slabs beforehand, but this is not my forte. What did you end up doing about it, if anything?

Greetings all, the info above is
very useful. We are renovating
our apt and are considering an
MSI quartz countertop for our
kitchen. We went to their
showroom and liked the
Calacatta Miraggio (our cabinets
are a stark white). However, I
read quite negative reviews
about MS, and especially the
Calacatta Miraggio as it seems
especially prone to staining
(defeating the purpose of
quartz). And the issues re food
safety.

It seems while the other MSI
quartz are made using the
Breton technology, the Calacatta
Miraggio is using the LumaLuxe
technology - and it seems
problematic.

We installed a Zodiac Stratus
White 7 years ago in our
weekend home and we never
had any problems at all - that is
why I want quartz again.

We like MSI because it has a
much larger choice of quartz,
including some that have nice
veins. And there is a huge price
difference with Silestone or the
other major companies. Our GC
and his fabricator say that they
never had any problems with
MSI (but I am not sure how much
to trust their judgment) and I
visited several kitchen
showrooms who also said that
they never had any issues and
that MSI is one of the top selling
brand and Calacatta Miraggio
the top selling MSI quartz.

We are also considering MSI
Carrara Lumos and Calacatta
Montage if they are better
quality but like them less. We like
veins. We have been agonizing
about this for months and need
to make a decision soon.

We have to be price
conscientious but I also don't
want to end up with a product I
hate or have to be so careful
especially since we like cooking.
I also read that these days, all
quartz is prone to staining!

We also visited other
showrooms, including GFO
Stone (limited choices but quite
nice, reasonably priced and
seems to have a good
reputation) but they don't have
any samples to take home and
see in our kitchen.

Any suggestions are so
welcome.
