Lacquered brass hinges on interior doors with unlacquered knobs?
Comments (16)I am using chrome in the kitchen, and polished nickel in the master (although I did switch to polished nickel in there on the door hardware because there was a logical place to do it - can't see brass and nickel at the same time). We don't have any doors in our kitchen really - swinging door to dining room is through the butler's pantry - but I don't have a problem with mixing metals if done well. Every magazine I look through has homes with either unlacquered brass or oil rubbed bronze hardware, and 99 percent of them use polished nickel in the kitchen. It looks great. I have even noticed many (like Brooke Giannetti) use chrome or polished nickel faucets, and then do a different finish on sconces in the bathroom. We did this in our basement - chrome faucet, oil rubbed bronze sconces, honed absolute black granite. I am not a fan of ORB faucets and I think choosing the right mirror will tie it all together....See MoreEmtek VS. Schlage
Comments (25)Keep in mind that any living finish (brass or bronze) will wear or tarnish over time. Some are lacquered coated but that lasts until there a scratch, sunlight or chemicals (household cleaners) that remove or breakdown the coating. Oil Rubbed Bronze is one of the most complained about because the finish comes off. Actually it wears where it is is touched and highlights which it is supposed to do. There is a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) finishes which is a plating tinted to a color like Bright Brass as an example. It is a hard finish that wears like chrome and should wear well if you don't like the high lights to tarnishing. PVD is also used on jewelry and other products....See MoreWhich knob or lever for this specific interior door style?
Comments (4)Knobs/levers are sort of the jewelry on a door, that function. There are pros and cons to both. Levers are easier to open, when you have your hands full, for children and elderly people. Knobs are harder to open for children, small children will try and try, which is also an annoying sound. It really depends on what you need for function versus the style you like. Bead board doors can go many different directions, but if you have an older home the knob may look more appropriate, if its a more recent home you can go either way. No help right?? I have levers in my home, but I was really careful when I chose them. I had the problem before that when my hands were full, the curvy lever like your #2 caught me by the pants. However, my kids are grown and I now have grandchildren, and unless the door is locked the 3 year old can get into everywhere. We have a lake house where everyone gathers for extended time periods, I changed out the levers for knobs so the 3 yr.old can't get into everything, but he tries and tries, that is an annoying sound....See MoreKnobs trend - satin nickel vs satin brass vs oiled bronze/b
Comments (5)I'm no expert, but I am in the middle of a whole home renovation and have been doing a LOT of research. I see the satin brass/gold everywhere as well, but I'm pretty sure it's trending downwards. Black can go with everything, so I think it has a much broader appeal. We're doing all matte black door hardware, and a mix of custom wood and matte black pulls for our kitchen cabinets. I was tempted to go with brass/gold as well, but I just don't see it aging very well. In the end though, it comes down to what you love. If you sell, and someone doesn't like your cabinet hardware, it isn't' too difficult to replace. Good luck!...See MoreHALLETT & Co.
