Spray in the evening before two days of rain? Worth it?
Comments (5)Bart, while the spray guides say petal fall for stone fruits I usually don't start spraying for curc until a week or two after that and I usually do OK. Shucks get in the way of the curcs activity and I don't think I have ever seen a curc on a pre-shuck fruitlet (I am out at night with a helmet light and have watched a great deal of curc activity). The earliest apricots I have had major curc problems on since I just wait for the peaches to be ready to hit them which is too late for the early cots. This year I am going to start earlier on the cots. I'm not saying the spray guides are wrong, the early spray is good since the curcs are starting to wake up, just not absolutely required so could be delayed given your rain timing. My early bloom petals are falling now and I'm not even thinking about spraying for curc. For apples you do need control right at petal fall, the above is for stone fruits only. I expect this is because the curc can get her egg-laying butt on the apple fruitlet right after petal fall, but the shuck makes that a difficult maneuver on stone fruits. Comments (11)mantis: I can only assume the lack of water and perhaps the late snowstorm and hard freezes we had this spring set SS back. It was doing so good when we had the spring warm up and then downhill. It is one of the ones I plan to move to the back garden. Linda: I'm willing to sweat a bit to get the pounds off from all the ice cream I've been eating the past month LOL. nat4b: I usually will get about 12 - 15 buds per scape on LOTW here. I still like this one even with the bad budcount this year. Ellie and Chris: Thanks for the comments. I took the photos of the one garden section last Thursday. Now, only a few blooms remain as of today. Sorry site for sure but makes it much easier to start moving plants. Julia...See MoreMore rain, more blooms
Comments (11)Mantis, I had deer problems when the foliage first appeared. (You reminded me I needed to deter them at that point!). Due to the excessive rains we had in the spring, deer deterrent was useless to put down. I have one section of my yard which is well on the other side of my driveway, where I have lots of noids in a landscaping role, chomped by deer. I did get my deterrents down and have not had them in my major garden. Having just typed that, with the rains we have had this week, I may have not a single bloom in the morning! And I am not sure of Eye Scream Sunday either. I have had it for several years but it has not been in a good place under the encroaching tree. But having said that, just look at that ratty foliage-that is the exception to almost all my lilies. I plan to move it and give it a chance. And Kennesaw-oh, I have just given up on it. It had one glorious season and then has withered to nothing. I moved it to better garden spots but with same results-no multiplying, no blooms. I don't even look at it any more!! Thanks Sherry-you are so right. This is one I will always have-as a matter of fact, I have three large clumps of it and they are all blooming now. Due to mud and rain, I could not get to the other clumps and this one is blooming in a tree!...See MoreLots more rain and lots more blooms
Comments (9)Thanks,,Kate. Making Rainbows has nice big blooms to be a short plant, and they stand up nicely. Jellyroll Morton reminds me of Clown Parade in being very photogenic. The cats are just nosy. Today I was picking blueberries and Spatter couldn't not help herself. she kept watching the entire time (and I picked five quarts) and had to keep checking to see what I was putting in the bowl. they follow all over the garden when I take photos or pick blooms or weed or put out mulch. At least two and maybe three or four of them will be there. They are now playing with my botanical labels. kay...See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il
