Soapstone counters & 3" soapstone backsplash--look goofy?
Comments (14)I'm almost finished with a kitchen remodel due to a water leak. I got new cabinets and appliances, the granite was reused. I didn't care whether or not I kept the same backsplash but the insurance said it wasn't necessary to have it replaced. So when they installed my new cabinets, to make them level, they were running higher (above the bottom of the lowest tile) so they took off the lowest row of tile. They explained that once the granite was reinstalled, it wouldn't look right to put something back in that area because you'd see how it runs uphill (or downhill) so we tore off the entire backsplash. I just had the cheap white 3"x6" subway tile from lowes, and I like it so that's what I'm having done again. But I'm soooooo glad that we tore it all out and re-tiling the backsplash. It will look so much better. It's getting done tomorrow. I personally would rather have the backsplash redone than to go with the 3" piece. JMHO BTW the insurance paid for a new backsplash since the granite couldn't be installed exactly where it was before and I got $1100.00 for a $300 backsplash :)...See Moresoapstone tile counter tops
Comments (5)Our counters are a combination of butcher block and soapstone tiles. I'm short and tend to rub against the counter as I work. I was concerned that a soapstone edge would get dinged and scratched, and very much show it. So we edged the soapstone runs with strips of the butcher block which doesn't show the damage as much and which should be less work to repair. We also inset a few soapstone tiles into the butcher block at the undermounted prep sink so I can put wet or staining things down without concern. We had it done by professionals so I don't know how stuff was mounted....See Morequestionable fabricator of our soapstone counter tops
Comments (10)Florida Joshua installed our soapstone in May. We have a seam in our sink . . . . that you can't find. People have to search to find the 3 seams in our stone, because they are hard to see/feel. He used a black epoxy, it looks like your fabricator used white? And the bit about soapstone being porous and the water seeping in? Puhlease. False. Here's my sink. The seam is in the lower left hand side of the sink, about 3 inches in. Good luck trying to find it. This is freshly oiled. This is 3 months after install. We aren't oilers. As you can see, not having the stone oiled doesn't affect seeing the seam....See MoreCleaning soapstone counters (countertops)
Comments (6)Good, I’m hoping I’ve saved you a few weeks of anxious fretting. My finding is that soapstone is a bit more maintenance than my old formica, which did not show oil spots. Even though the spots will evaporate eventually I find that I can’t leave the kitchen at night if there are splatters or rings of oil on the surfaces. But its all okay, as long as I know _how_ to clean my new counters. My sister asked if I minded that it is more work, and really I don’t . Somehow, dealing with a natural (and not shiny) stone is just soothing —wiping them down just makes me happy. From what I’ve read they will darken naturally over time, but I think maybe not to the degree that mineral-oiling would accomplish. The edges around my sink are already showing up a bit darker, but that looks really cool. Congratulations on getting your counters in. I totally love mine and think you will too. :)...See MoreN Em
