Goodman VS. Trane or Carrier HVAC installation advice
Comments (9)I'm learning more all the time. Can you tell me more about the TXV metering device for the E-Coil? My current 80% unit already has a condensate drain pump used when I run the AC in the summer and I have not had a problem with it. This self contained pump sits on the floor next to the furnace and pumps the condensate into my sump pump then the sump pump pumps it out of the house. Wouldn't I just run the high efficiency furnace moisture drain pipe out to the same pump? I have to imagine that moisture drain pipe is up high on the High Efficiency unit and my condensate pump is on the floor, gravity will do the job unless the pump fails and the water backs up into the furnace. Is that the same moisture drain pipe that I have on my current 80% efficiency furnace that drains the condensate when I run the AC in the summer? One of the quotes I got from a HVAC hybrid install (95% efficient furnace w/ 2 stage variable speed furnace and 15 or 16 SEER Heat Pump) was to put a catch pan under the furnace with the furnace up on blocks and put a pump in the drain pan that pumps the condensate water into my sump pump. This gives you more time to deal with a pump going bad vs the self contained pump I have currently. I have another question about buying the new 95% efficient furnace. My current furnace is 80% effecient and is 100,000 BTUs. I have replacement choices of 90,000 BTU or 115,000 BTU replacement. My house is 2000 sq. ft, not including basement. Is there much efficiency difference between the 2 choices? I know the bigger unit will probably supply more heat, but is that at more cost in energy? Or is the difference nominal. My first thought is to go with the bigger unit for only $100-$200 more in cost. Mikes...See Morecarrier hvac or trane hvac
Comments (5)Jt Some questions please. What is your location? What size home living area? What size furnace and eff are you replacing? What size AC are you replacing? I would like to know the exact mdl number evap coil for each quote. What thermostat is proposed for the Carrier quote? That is a big difference between the 96% eff Carrier furnace and the 80% eff Trane furnace-both 60 K input. That would be about 56 KBTUs output on the Carrier and about 48 KBTUs on the Trane. Not insignificant. I don't care for some shortcuts that homeowners make particularly on reusing linesets and using existing thermostats that shortchange a nice furnace's operational capability. Post back with the info requested. IMO...See MoreHey ryanhughes question about Goodman HVAC
Comments (3)The $9091 for the Bryant, is before any rebates or tax incentives, correct? There are many happy owners of Goodman systems but my opinion, based on what I've seen and read and experiences of neighbors, is they tend to be a lower grade product. Now, most brands are very similar in terms of parts, but to some respect it still holds true. Goodman is geared toward lower budget applications and can be bought fairly easily and at a lower cost. Feature wise the Goodman is lacking compared to the Bryant. If you are comfortable with the Goodman dealer, see about having him quote a more comparable system to the Bryant Evolution. I do not see any mention of a thermostat to control the Goodman system. The Evolution control is above anything else on the market, though the VisionPRO IAQ from Honeywell comes very close. A one-man operation did the HVAC of a new construction home 18 years ago? That's pretty impressive (of course I assume he must have had the help of a few others). Comments (7)You have to keep in mind that many of the components used among the many brands of HVAC units are identical and similar. A brand is just that. Tranes break, Carriers break, Goodmans break... they all break. Installation can make or break any installation. I still do think some brands make better products than others, however. Sometimes there are little things that put one brand ahead of the other--design, engineering, parts availability, efficiency, capacity, etc... I like Trane personally, but I'm not too impressed with their upper-end line of equipment for heat pumps and air conditioners. Carrier has a good, wide product line. You have to consider what you want. Goodman is a basic system. Other brands can provide more features. Of the 93% 2-stage Carrier and the 96% variable-speed Goodman, I'd choose the latter for the variable-speed blower. Put the comparable Carrier up against it, I'd choose the Carrier with the Infinity control and Performance outdoor unit....See MoreSteph
