Design Dilemma Lighting

How many lights do I need?

We are remodeling this room. All the walls, ceiling and flooring will be replaced. A pool table will go back under the light fixture shown. We would like to add recessed lighting. How many lights do I need? How far apart should they be? What size? The room is 16X20.

If table is placed under light it may be too close to the wll for play. Hard to tell without measurements.

We previously had the pool table under the light and it was fine. It is a smaller table.

If you're getting 2500 - 3000 lumens per square foot, that should be plenty. Keeps the plants within inches of the lights.

Welcome, Bellejack! I'm no expert, but we have a kitchen island that is 6 feet long with a seating area on one side, all the same level because I wanted lots of workspace. Over the island we have 3 low-voltage pendants: one centered and the other two split the difference...in other words, 18 inches apart. Don't know if that's what a lighting designer would spec, but it's what our architect planned in our lighting layout. Sorry, no pics. You will need to think about what height to place those lights, eventually, with the two different levels on the bar. Also, consider whether you have other pendants in the adjacent rooms...too many hanging "things" can be distracting, IMHO.

One thing that might be confusing (is to me at least), basing the lumens needed on the overall kitchen dimensions. I wonder if the space on the one wall taken up by cabinets, pantry and frig should have been deducted? Because there really isn't any floor/ceiling/counter/wall to illuminate in that area. But I am pretty sure that you do count counter area even though there are also cabinets-- you want to illuminate the interior of the cabinets a bit when opened also. But yes, you do count any oversink light and UCLs in the total lumens. Based on that calculation, I did overdo it -- I could have eliminated 2 of the ceiling cans. I did install a dimmer after I saw all the brightness.

Probably 4" lights, 4 ' apart. Put them on dimmers; make sure they're bright enough for your room. Some advise 4000K LEDs, but that is up to you. Others don't care for them.

Decoenthusiaste - Thanks for your reply. Where would you suggest I put the lights? Two on each side of the room? Four in a line on one side? The existing light is not centered because the ramp.

I'd put one in each corner, minimum, and if you want more, add between those on the long sides.

to clarify: center one on the entry door (white in pics), about two feet in, and then do all the others at similar positioning in the other corners.

The ceilings are ten foot. Would that make a difference in the number or size of lights?

General rule: divide the ceiling height by 2 and that tells you yow far apart to place them (5 feet in your case.) Also to prevent shadows, mount them 3 feet from walls. As for placement, if you have any special focal point other than the pool table, start by highlighting that area (maybe a bar, or a seating area.) Lay out your furniture placement first and see what needs lighting in order to both function and look good.
