New Build landscaping in Zone 5A. Help please?!

New Build in Zone 5A. Looking for ideas that can include perrenials, shrubs, ground cover, flowering trees or potted planters. Have already put in black aluminum edging and black mulch. Although not shown in picture, the small dirt area also has been edged and mulched. Looking for low maintenance landscaping with at least one flowering tree. Would truly appreciate suggestions. The choices are very overwhelming!

We need a bit more information:

- Give the general area you are in. Two of my siblings and I (central NH) are all in zone 5, but I have adequate rainfall with acid, sandy soil, my sister (central WI) has alkaline, dense clay, and my brother (foothills near Denver) is in an arid area with decomposed rock and clay. What we can grow is very different.

- What kind of sun does the area get? If this is on the south or west side of the house, this will be a much hotter and brighter area, especially with the rock on the house wall, than if this is the north side of the house.

- How deep is the bed (front to back) both in the shallow area along the walkway and in the larger areas along the house?

- How deep are the eaves which will cause a rain shadow?

- How much water gets dumped into the small area between the walk and the garage? If it drains a large area, this may be unplantable because it will either be really dry or flooded by heavy flow from the downspout. This may need to be a spot with less soil and a deep layer of large rounded rocks to break up the flow with a pot for seasonal plantings and winter evergreen branches set on the gravel. IME it is difficult to keep any long term plantings alive in a pot in 5A becuase there aren’t a lot of plants whose roots will tolerate -20F in a pot. The temperature swings are too great.

- How far to the right of the bed is there room? A photo with the property edge marked by an object and taken from closer to the curb will help with tree placement. It does not look like the bed currently has room for a tree that would not be against the house in a few years.

Generally speaking, you want low plants along the walkway. You don’t want to hide the walkway or the front door.

Plants under the window should be low enough to stay below the window.

Your tree should be far enough from the house and sized so that it won’t need pruning to keep it away from the wall and roof.

Shrubs should be planted so at maturity they have at least a foot between the shrub and the house. So a plant that will end up 5’ wide should be planted at least 3 1/2’ from the house. This helps with keeping moisture away from the house and allows access for things like window cleaning or painting.

Dogwood at the corner, minuet Mt. Laurel under the windows. Physocarpus tiny wine at the edge of the porch. Along the path, you want short stuff, I'd put in some salvia and phlox subulata and some purple coneflowers. Consider a climber up your column, clematis, for example.

It depends on the winter and where you planted it. If it's in a sheltered spot, it may even be a zone 6 microclimate. If it's out in the open, subject to winter winds, you might surround it with burlap attached to stakes. I've heard of putting dry autumn leaves inside the burlap for protection, but that might invite chewing rodents to hibernate. My attitude is, if it lives, great, it can stay. If it dies, throw it out and buy something else. Lessons learned. Save the receipt for a refund. Good luck.

I think you can send/take a soil sample to Cornell to get testing done. They can probably test for lead if that seems likely to be a problem as well as pH, major nutrients, and organic matter. You can do some basic tests as outlined here: http://organicgardening.about.com/od/soil/a/easysoiltests.htm http://www.finegardening.com/how-to/articles/hows-your-soil-texture.aspx?id=81680 Adding organic matter to the soil is always good, particularly if it is clay (yours sounds like it has quite a bit of clay) or sand. Some options to get additional compost might include: Can you borrow a truck? Could you hire a landscaper to deliver city compost for a cost that seems reasonable? Can you rent a truck (I think some of the big box stores rent trucks by the day/hour)? Is there a soil/mulch/compost supplier that can deliver a quantity from their bulk stocks for a price that seems reasonable to you? In future years, you may be able to pick up other folks leaves curbside to create more of your own compost. How worried you should be about contaminents may depend on where you are planting. For instance I live on an old farm, so in general I don't worry, but I don't plant anything edible near the house or where other old buildings stood since lead was used in house paint for many years, so I just assume that the soil near the house has a relatively high lead content. Likewise, I wouldn't plant next to a busy road since lead was a gas additive, but if your land has no history of industry, I wouldn't worry beyond that. Covering the grass is a great start since it will add organic matter as well. If you used enough layers of newspaper and it has been on long enough, most of the grass will have been killed. Grass will grow sideways into the garden under the stone border, so I would add a V shaped trench a few inches deep that gets refreshed a couple times over the course of the growing season to help keep the grass from growing into the veggie bed. Keeping mulch on the surface will help prevent weed seeds from sprouting and keep moisture levels more even. "We've had a few landscape designers come out to give us ideas, but most of them want to over-plant and turn the place into a forest." There is pressure in the industry to go in this direction and it comes from everywhere: the client, the boss, the contractors. Everybody wants to squeeze more plants in if they can. Part of this is impatience. Everyone wants quick or instant results. Part of it comes from the urge to sell product. And part of it comes from peer pressure; a designer may not feel like they're "doing enough" professionally if they aren't providing the fullest look. I felt this in my early days of work and it took a long time to resist. It's a nice looking, good sized house, but the walk to the front porch is seriously undersized relative to everything else. Unfortunately, it cheapens the look of everything else. The walk and the step should be the width (or nearly) of the opening between the porch posts. Due to the grade, it would probably require installing a small retaining wall. (There really ought to be a retaining wall there now. I can picture maintenance difficulty and erosion problems on the way.) If you ever decide to fix it, I would explore the idea of eliminating one step, by tilting the walk slightly upward as it approaches the porch. (The picture doesn't indicate if this is feasible.) IMO, there is not enough shown in the pictures to give much feedback on planting. From the overall front, it looks like you could use some large trees off the corner of the house, but neither of these areas can be seen well. Nor can the complete foundation planting area be seen. (We only see the central part from a hard angle.) My picture is not a comprehensive look, but is only addressing the walk issue.

Wow everyone thank you so much for the suggestions. If worse comes to worse in regards to overwintering in pots, I am willing to rent out those garage spaces that apartments have! We could fit one of the tiny cars in it, too. It’ll only be for the winter months anyways! I do have pot bottoms that roll (though I’ve broken so many wooden ones so I will get new iron ones when I move up). Moving them shouldn’t be too hard. From what everyone is saying, it looks like there is a fair shot of my potted Austins being able to survive! Thank you guys so much for your input! :) Before investing in more I want to work with my current children! LOL I absolutely love this rose forum and how fast and helpful everyone is!! If I could post a bajillion heart emojis, I would! Heart heart heart!!!!!

I’d do a flowering tree planted a few feet into the grass of the curve, for balance and to keep it away from the house foundation, then a mix of perennials inside the mulched area.
