The value or importance of new operating system versions always seems over-hyped. The job of the OS is to run the PC (at a level below and as the interface for the programs/apps). If it works well, it works well.

For me, Windows 10 is noticeably better than its predecessors simply because over time lingering problems have been fixed. Win PCs no longer get residual memory clogs as programs are changed over a session, no longer freeze and stop to show the Blue Screen of Death, no longer are limited to inadequate amounts of RAM, boot up very noticeably faster, run faster and cleaner, and on and on.

I haven't been following it closely but apparently the user interface will be different. That's fine, I'm happy with the old one (and run Classic Shell now Open Shell anyway).

Windows 11 info

A link introducing the new Windows 11 appeared on my pc yesterday. It went to a 46 minute video on the product which I bailed on after 5 minutes of talking heads with no info on what new features the update includes.

If your PC is not ”new” enough, you will need to shell out $$$$ to buy a brand new PC. Microsoft is now requiring some hardware to be available on the computer as well as that some software be turned on. Only relatively new PCs have both. See the link below

If you cannot afford a new pc, consider getting a small tablet (like ipad, etc.), a smartphone, and then keep the existing Pc with W10 “forever”. Check new Google Chrome computers if that is something that interests you.

That's an interesting update, luis. The article says that WIn 10 will be fully supported until October 2025. That being 4 years from now, anyone actively using a PC today that's too old to meet the required specs, should expect that either their PC will die anytime between now and 4 years from now, or that that will be a good reason and time to buy a new one.

Chromebooks are okay for limited uses but not for many things people do and cannot be used with many software systems people use. Take a Chromebook, add a few features, and the price point can easily approach or exceed the cost of a new Windows PC at the low end of the pricing range. Just something to consider.

START > SETTINGS > UPDATE AND SECURITY...will tell you if your PC will support Win 11. If no, stick with Win 10 and don't worry about it until 2025.

I'm not going to "upgrade" my fairly recent computer to Win11, but (of course) my next one will be Win 11. I was thinking about getting a new one now, but I'll wait until Win11 is the standard. My price point currently is $1k.

I received notification that my recently purchased Dell PC is Windows 11 compatible. No surprise here but I have little interest in upgrading. It gets only pedestrian usage - email, spreadsheets, word processing, photo storage, etc. My assumption is that 11 will only bring whistles and bells and I don't do any of that on this pc. So, I'll reevaluate that need in 2025, God willing.

During an update, one of my Win10 Pro PCs warned that it didn't meet Win11 "requirements", specifically UEFI. Apparently Win11 won't load without it. The other Win10 Pro PC does have UEFI, but I have that disabled so I could install Puppy Linux on it. Wonder if this means any Win11 installation will not be able to coexist w/Linux?

See if Linux plans to do something about that.

FWIW - Logged into my PC this morning and had a notification that Windows 11 was ready for installation. I declined.
