Bow window replacement options 11 feet wide -X-post Window forum

We have replaced every window in our 1960 ranch with Certainteed vinyl, except for this monster bow window. 6 feet tall and 11 feet wide. We are in Northern Virginia so we have a few snows and alot of sub-freezing weather and it's time to fix this drafty condensation monster. We're staying in this house probably 10-12 more years. 10 years ago the $7K bids were not in the budget so we've been saving to take this project on but don't know the best option. We love the light and the view. Professionals or experienced remodelers, what would you do? If possible can you add pix or photo sources so we can show a professional what we want? Thanks in advance.

none of the panes open now and it would be nice to have an operable window option. I see on replacement window company sites you can combine windows and it can all be custom. I like something like this...should the smaller ones be operable and screened the the top be just glass?

i'm learning....the photo example I just posted above is a bay and we have a bow (it curves out). Here is a bow I like and wonder if it can work in our case to have six separate 6 ft. 4 inch tall windows.

Hello iris21, Thank you for your compliment! If I can paint on glass or anything else for that matter, YOU can! My husband and I bought an old schoolhouse and turned it into our home. We had coatrooms in each classroom and in one room we set our counter, stove and fridge back into the coatroom, and above that work area we were installing a wall up to the 11' high ceiling. He set the window into the wall above my work area. (I found this window in someones garbage it is 6' wide and about 24" in height, I placed a florescent light behind it and we use it for a night light in the kitchen at night or just turn it on when company comes for a wonderful effect. (I have other pics of our home if you wish to see them) We all love renovations! The Sea Trout pic is coming up in a local auction in my town on Sept 4 & 5. I taught myself how to do the gallery glass painting and love a good challange. Nothing less! You should invest in a few bottles of the paint and give it a try! hi SC.... have you considered Infinity by Marvin? I was really impressed by the window, and their cost is very close to the Andersen Renewals. I had a bad experience with my Andersen Sales guy - he was very high-pressure, didn't listen to a word I said, and was rude to my kids (who were putting the windows through their own test!). But both windows seemed pretty good and in the same price range. I too have the same feelings about vinyl - i live in an old house and would love to have something that looks a bit nicer than vinyl. Hi jeri, I have not talked with the installer yet on my decision in no longer gluing the floor but floating it. My neighbor has a floated 5"" wide Merbau hardwood floor and I like the way it feels when I walk on it. It has no hollow sound and feels solid but has a tiny bit if cushion so it does not feel like I am walking on my hard tiles in my two foyer areas. My other neighbor's very dark 5" wide plank floor feels very hard to walk on since it was glued. I am hoping my installer agrees with me and feels it is OK to float the 5" wide Triangulo Engineered 1/2" thick with a 3 MM sawn cut veneer of Brazilian Cherry on top floor ( have a concrete floor and installing a sub-floor would cause problems in my door ways and raise my floor much higher than my Porcelain Tile foyers so I decided to go with an engineered wood floor that has a sawn cut veneer). I just hope I can refinish it if I ever need to since BR-111 says you can refinish the floor a few times and I am hoping the floating installation does not affect this.

Thanks for the post and mention. Bow window pricing depends a good bit on operator choices, options, and sizes. That unit is a full removal and you will need to determine what type of unit would fit best there. I 5-lite will look a bit bulky and have a good bit of frame as compared to the existing wood structure. Feel free PM me directly and I can give you an idea of what we would normally see as a range up here and what you might expect where you are located. We try to keep pricing discussions to a minimum as they can be misleading for future readers of the forums if they live in a different market or conflate the numbers.

Remove the brick and make it a boxed bay instead, with separate windows and a different but complementary siding and roofing. That will lower the costs considerably and give you 95% as much light.

If you did not replace the bow yet then listen please. I am a contractor of 35 years. If this was my home. I would eliminate the existing bow window and replace it with a 4 pieces straight window. It will cost 50% less then a bow or bay and will give you better insulating value then a bow or bay window. I use 3 window companies Anderson, Marvin and Kurpiewski Windows Producer. Out of the 3 only Kurpiewski will fit you the best. They are fairly close to you located in New Jersey. Kurpiewski Windows produces very high quality virgin vinyl windows. They are very tough, good and long lasting windows. To buy from them you must go through there dealer network. Sue I am recommending for you a 4 pieces straight virgin vinyl window from Kurpiewski Windows Producer in New Jersey. Hope you get it done soon.

Hi Andrew, Good recommendation. I have Kurpiewski windows in my home for about 10 or 15 years now. They are great. No argon seal failure at all with 28 windows. My buddy is a Kurpiewski Window Producer certified installer, and he only recommended Kurpiewski Windows as the number one vinyl replacement window to get. So yes do buy those windows they have worked out for me and all my friends.
