Windows Design Dilemma dining room

Would like to a window to our dining room-please help!

We would like to add a window to our dining room, on the wall on the right side of this photo. How do we start researching what type of window to get, how big of a window we can add, what brand, etc.? Any pitfalls we should watch out for?

You want to get a qualtity window that matches the windows you already have there. This is a small and complex job that many window companies not want to take on . My guess is the brand will be dependent upon the contractor willing to take on this job. Quite often you may find only a small general contractor may be the only one that would do this . You do need someone for an attention to detail. The wall is going to need be opened up to get a header in there . You may need structural engineer and some to draw up some plans. The exterior may make things complicated. There could be hidden complications such as mechanicals behind the wall. We have no idea of what the outside of this wall looks like. Im guessing 6k minimum.

First will adding this window change for the better the exterior? I agree there could be many reasons that there is no window on that wall. Maybe explain a bit more as to whay you need the window in a space mostly used at night.

sueb20, Thanks for your reply. I like the ideas of gray wall and ceiling. To date I have always painted my ceilings white but am willing to try something new. The right yellow/gold sofa WOULD look wonderful. I will definitely paint the paneling the same color as the walls. We'll replace what we can first, with drywall. Lots of the gaps you see in the paneling are due to the forced hot water pumbing system which we removed. Oh the projects that just drag on.... Hi tinan - Two votes to paint the beams lighter and two to keep them the same, hmm. They are structural but after 15 years of seeing them, I may be ready to not see them. With the rich dark floor (this is my first dark floor ever and I'm so pleased with the feeling it conveys) to 'ground' the space, I think I like the idea of a lighter backdrop. The light IS attached to the beam and is so going away. (DH bangs his head constantly into it). Hi teacats, glad you like the sconce. Regarding gray walls - do you think that's too much grey? I appreciate the link to the burnt ember (I haven't tried that yet). It's only paint and I can certainly paint a few areas with different color swatches. I do have a rug which I love; here's a close up of it (with of course, the requisite dog): AnnieDeighnaugh - Nice to hear from you! The floor is more grey than brown. The stove has a fake fire-resistant I'm sure - weird large grey rock backsplash and is built on a rounded cement surface. I've often thought about tiling the cement floor and front with something from Fireclay or Heath, and eventurally replacing the weird faux surface. Do you think I could actually do something to make this look better in the meantime?!! Good progress yesterday. DH has completed the electrical and installed most of the insulation (for sound). We picked up 4 sheets of drywall and should get it up this morning.

Thank you for all the good suggestions and helpful pictures. ; ) When you are suggesting window film, Tim, are you saying that by using the film we wouldn't need to close the curtains because the film would cut the glare, or that the film would eliminate fading the floor and furniture? Our windows have a UV protection built into them, so I don't think we'll have much trouble with fading. I like to let as much sun in as we can get as long as the glare isn't too much. It's just as cloudy as Seattle here (I just checked the data...) so when the sun is shining, we practically feel like throwing a party it feels so good! Two days of sun in a row are a cause for celebration. ; ) I'm totally ok with just doing the curtains if that's all we need. I've looked at so many pictures of long curtains with bamboo blinds that I was beginning to feel like my windows would look half dressed with only curtains. DH is not a bamboo blind fan (but could be persuaded, possibly) but the price of them is what I don't like. Our windows aren't quite standard sizes, so that makes it even trickier. I did consider doing a subtle floral print Roman blind, but I'd want to hang it so that when open, it didn't cover the window glass at all. Is it difficult to hang Romans a few inches above the moulding? (Do they hang right when bumped out at the moulding thickness?) From what many of you are saying this isn't even necessary. I'm all for less work, since the Roman blinds would be diy. Annie, your views are stunning! OT, I'm on the hunt for a large, inexpensive rug to put under our table. I didn't realize just how much sound the plaster and exposed joist ceiling were absorbing when this room was in it's pre-Reno state. The fresh drywall has turned this room into an echo chamber. One of my kids dropped their fork last night and we all cringed at the skull splitting sound.

Picture windows don't open. Is that really what you'd want? You could use awning windows but you'd have to make sure that the size of your windows doesn't exceed the maximum size available from the manufacturer. Casements provide better ventilation as they catch the wind when open. Awnings can be left open even when it's raining which is convenient. -- not an expert

I think the piece the TV is on would feel more at home in the basement with the chunky coffee table. Your home looks to be more contemporary in style except for the stair railing and the big empty display/bookcase. Do you have the budget to remove the built-in? That would give you some wall space for furniture and art. What is the exterior style of your home? Can you pull off a contemporary interior design and not stray too far from the look of the house outside? I don't think the DR is large enough to add more furniture there. I suggest a great piece of art and a rug that is 36-42" larger than your table top on every side. Pull the same colors into the LR with big art on the wall opposite the FP and above a 3-seat sofa where the built-in is. You can do another rug in the LR that is similar in style and color to the DR rug. For example, here are two navy rugs that could work together. The top one picks up your wall color, and the bottom one picks up on the fireplace stone.

Todd Inman is spot on- you need a good general contractor. Buy a window that matches the windows you have in aesthetics and general quality, other than that the whole wall can be glass depending on how much $ you want to spend. It is one of those projects that is complicated since it affects everything- drywall, electrical, siding, structure, etc.

And when you say the window should match the other windows, I'm assuming you mean style, but not necessarily material? Existing windows are wood, but they are 25 years old. I assume we will have to replace them at some point. I probably would prefer something lower maintenance than wood--maybe vinyl?

And this may not be the appropriate forum, but our current window sills need replacing. Should we just replace our window sills at this point? Our windows seem to be functioning ok, for the most part. How do we tell if our windows need replacing?

The contractor we're thinking of using uses Winco, it seems. We are in the mid-Atlantic region.

I would not use either that window or that contractor. Contractors used to working with marginal products do not have good habits to bring to the better quality products. Since you anticipate needing new windows for the whole home, this becomes a much more attractive project to a contractor. You’ll get a lower per piece price by bundling the whole into a single project.
