staceyneil -- thanks for the Google images! (Why didn't I think of that?) Our bathroom is most similar to the last image. Not so glam, and a wall separating the vanity room from the toilet and shower, but the orientation of the vanity to the way you walk through the space is similar. The pictures you chose all suggest that the floating vanity really would contribute to a sense of spaciousness. Suellen -- good point about stuff rolling under the vanity, but I actually think it won't be too hard to clean under there. Just_julie is right that boys don't seem to need much storage. (How they generate so much clutter without needing much storage has always been a mystery to me...) Thanks all. I think we're going to try the floating vanity. Our cabinetmaker is excited about the idea. He wants to show us some cherry samples with a pronounced vertical grain in different stains, so we'll see how that looks.

Answering my own question. Ha. Model came out in early 2012. Found out it's the french door sitting at 29 1/2" (plus 1" rear vent or 30 1/2") that are 36" in width, the fridge case or box itself is 35 5/8". Needs 1/2" side panels minimum. Might just work as current fridge side panels are 5/8" on both sides. Electrolux refrigerators have wheels for easier sliding.

We chose really large tiles; 24" x 24" on the floor and 12" x 24" on the walls with a 6 x 24 "border" throughout - and it looks great! Before we did our bathroom I had only seen this kind of tile in magazine pictures or in a large showroom. So yes, I was a bit scared if we made the right choice for our much smaller bathroom. But even my very old fashioned stepfather who tried to discourage me before he laid the tiles for us was amazed by the effect and loved it. That is a really big tile so I wouldn't recommend to lay it on the diagonal or you'll have a huge amount of waste. This is a picture of the wall tile.

Now you're getting into the design aesthetics of the kitchen. How important is it for you to have that specific tap. If you plan on it being a show piece then you have to show it off and putting it underneath cabinets in a cramped position is not going to do it. If you want to show it off - then raise the cabinets which makes sense anyway, and put glass doors in them OR put some higher open shelves above the sink - maybe 2 of them. Then you are creating a focal point for the tap. If the storage is more important than the tap then I would suggest a lower tap to avoid the cramped feeling. But raising the cupboard level over the sink is a good idea to avoid bumping your head and the claustrophobic feeling which may develop.
