Snow fountain browning

Planted a snow fountain in early May in zone 6, Missouri. It isn't doing well. Leaves are crunchy and turning brown and yellow. Getting worse by the day. It looked worse after trying to water more. We use a oscillating sprinkler. Did we burn the leaves? Photos in comments.

I love the weeping shape, so I definitely want to avoid the mushroom look at all costs! It's in a difficult place to cut a bed around (totally flat yard and it's near the corner of the house, so we'd have some drainage issues with cutting a bed there). We do have one in the front that is far off from the house I could do that with though. That one doesn't grow nearly as fast for some reason though (it gets a lot more sun, which I assume has something to do with it), so I don't have the same problem with the branches laying all over the ground with that one...(although I wish I did actually, as I want it to grow nice and big!) All in all, I'm glad to know that I can safely clip it when it needs to be clipped back. Just seems the thing keeps growing wider and longer branches, but the trunk stays short! Thanks for your advice - I do appreciate it!

OK - here's the thing :-) Bugs eat holes in foliage. Unless they are skeletonizing the leaves and defoliating the trees, it is almost always a cosmetic issue - unsightly perhaps but no harm to the tree. Brown "spots" are not necessarily indicative of shot hole - actual holes/missing tissue in the leaf are more symptomatic of that problem. As bboy described, it looks like someone peppered the tree with buckshot. Again, on deciduous members of the genus, shot hole is more cosmetic than harmful and attempting to treat now is likely to cause more issues than help. This disease is often associated with excessive overhead watering, either from rain or sprinklers and any sort of treatment now is not going to be of much value. Just be sure to clean up well in fall and get rid of the fallen leaves. I guess the gist of this post is that we need to exercise a degree of tolerance :-) We are dealing with nature and flawless foliage is not the norm, despite what we prefer. By all means treat IF the situation warrants it. In this case, I don't see any reason to believe that it does. All in all, your little tree looks pretty darn good for a weeping cherry.

take a lawn chair.. at about 2pm ..... and go sit in that corner.. during triple digit temps.. and tell us how hot it is there .... watering may or not be perfect ... and you need to confirm that ...but i suspect heat ... is there any wind with the heat ... to help temper such??? .. looks a bit like a dead zone .... short of rigging shade cloth.. im not sure what i would do... also go out in early morning.. and find out if it has recovered over night ... maybe its just not a z9 plant ... or at least for this little micro climate ... can it adjust when it is fully established in that spot.. i dont know ... [that would be in a year or two.. in tree time] ken

An oscillating sprinkler is the worst way to water. Put a hose next to the trunk on a slow trickle and leave it for 30 minutes or so until the rootball is fully hydrated.

and i hope there isnt fabric under the stone...

and i wonder if its planted at the proper depth ...

pull back the rock.. and look for the root flare ... take a pic or two for us ...

then take a hand trowel and dig a couple holes.. in the gob planted.. and in surrounding soil .... and FIND OUT about moisture at root depth .. and water accordingly ...

i also suspect severe under watering... thru the root mass planted .... i would also... after the holes are dug.. probably putting the hose on trickle... until there is water 3 to 6 inches down ... dig more holes and find out ...

and then dont water again.. until it is drying down int eh root mass... dig more holes.. no one can really tell you how it works in your soil.. in your yard.. in your weather.. so all you are left with is digging holes.. until you learn ...

only caveat.. is if you have bad non draining clay ... let us know ...

if you perfect watering.. the tree might be able to releaf and move on ...

a transplanted tree of that size.. you are responsible for ALL watering this year .. as it grows a good root mass ... in drought next year.. and then after that.. it should be rather free range.. and most likely happy with whatever water you put on the lawn ...
