How to remove one detector from networked smoke detectors

I have a small house and when the house was built, code of course required a detector be placed in the kitchen and all bedrooms. The 1st floor bedroom detector and the kitchen detector are within 2 feet of each other. Problem is the cottage has low ceilings and the kitchen smoke detector goes off if what i'm cooking smokes just a little bit...then the whole house goes off. I'd like to remove the kitchen detector from the circuit, but does that mess up my networked smoke detector system? I think the bedroom detector will be sufficient should there be a real fire/smoke.
