I have a concrete basement floor. What do I need to consider if I want to paint it and then seal over it.

IMO unless it was finished to a very smooth finish I would look at some kind of flooring on top of the concrete . We did vinyl plank with dri croe under it you could do core tec that has the underlaymnet attached. If you insist on painting that floor will need to be tottally spotless and degreased before any paint will stick. I would probably look at garage floor finishes

For all the reasons Patricia mentioned, I think painting it would be a mistake. I'd do either a tile floor or carpet tiles. Not a fan of LVT; I know it's popular but it's an ecological disaster.

Not sure if you have solved your cat urine issue yet? I wanted to give you a recipe that will eliminate the urine and the odor. It may have already been posted but here it is anyway. 1 (16) ounce bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide 1 (tsp) baking soda a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid like Dawn or Palmolive pour the peroxide into a clean container, add the baking soda and the dishwashing liquid, stir very gently to dissolve the baking soda. Pour onto stained area and leave it alone for 24 hours. This solution is the Best and most effective I have ever seen or used. If you can get ahold of a black light, you can turn it on and the urine areas will glow. After you use the above recipe and leave it for 24 hours, if you turn the black light on, the stains are gone and so is the odor. Give it a try, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the results. Thats it. You can double tripple or quadruple this recipe for very large areas.

How to Fix a Crack in a Concrete Basement Floor?

Best way to do this is to chase the crack with a chisel and clean up the edges. Buy 1/4-1/2" closed cell backer rod, you can get it on amazon for $6. Put that inside the crack along entire length about 1/2" deep and in the same place you can order and get Quikcrete Cement Crack Filler (home depot might be cheaper for this item) You can also use Sika or Quikrete self leveling concrete filler it sold in most Home depot stores HD also sells the backer rod, but I'm not sure if they have 1/4" or 1/2" I think they only have 3/4"... just make sure to get the one intended for concrete not windows (frost king brand), it would be Sika brand usually, they would know "hopefully". What to use to fill nail holes in concrete basement floor ?

The material to use is Vinyl Concrete Patch powder. It's available at all the big box home centers. You can also use hydraulic cement, which is better if you have a high water table and problems with water seeping through the holes. Get as much dirt out of the holes as you can with a vacuum cleaner. If possible, undercut each hole a little with a chisel (make the holes larger at the bottom), but if you can't, don't sweat it. Mix the compound as directed on the container. Don't use too much water. Dampen the inside of the hole with water from a spray bottle. Damp, not sopping. Stuff the compound in and smooth it with a putty knife. Let set. Done.

I like something a bit warmer in a basement so I have dri-core with vinyl plank on top. You can do some pretty industrial looking vinyl floors like Manhattan from Mannington if you want that look.I have used it in a couple of clients homes and it is quite nice looking.

"Paint and then seal"...sounds like using garage paint with a polyurethane sealant, is that correct?

Be VERY careful with concrete paint + sealer. They are OFTEN for OUTDOOR USE ONLY!!! There are TOO MANY people who made themselves sick (ill...as in move out of the house for 2 weeks type ill) because they used 'exterior grade' products inside their homes. And yes, a garage sealant/paint finish are exterior grade. Garages are not considered livable space.
