HELP .. turn this yellow & green house into something beautiful please

piaa

We are doing a major remodel of our 1925 Historic home in Florida (with Historic approval) and we can change the color without permission .. whew.

The current exterior wood trim around the windows is rotted and the tiles cracked and falling apart (when you get close) and although we love the color as it makes us smile, we are not yellow and green people and as we are making this change we are going in a new direction but I can't for the life of me figure out what direction it should be ... HELP PLEASE

I had some hand painted tiles made but when they arrived they are more of a purple tone than the blue that I thought they were and we still like the tiles but can't figure a trim color so I went in search of new tiles and found the attached (surprisingly hubby loves them) so what color trim and door do you think?

We would love a trim color that is fun but leans more towards an elegant feel with a door color that is classic (have always thought black high gloss but am totally open) I am more of a neutal color girl (OK I am afraid of color) but trying to branch out of my comfort zone - the color of the house will remain white. Attached is the new blue tile as well as the current "purple" tile.

If you are still reading ... thank you

Buy some black wrapping paper or mat board, cut it in strips the width of the trim and door, tape it up and see how you like it. Alternatively, try bright navy blue and cobalt blue paints on foamcore boards.

I need help please. Petunia leaves turning Yellow.

    Q

Hi John, Well, I don't know if petunias can really be classified as "acid loving" or not. However, I do know that they are very sensitive to a high pH, which will cause the leaves to turn yellow. Regarding using reduced fertilizer dosages for our seedlings, we often see suggestions that recommend one fourth strength. The problem is that any recommended percentage may be weak for one fertilizer and still very strong for another. And, of course, one fourth strength probably isn't going to be right for all plants. If you're using Miracle-Gro Miracid (30-10-10) you might try one fourth strength, at least at first to green up those leaves. I'd use it with every watering but not more than once a week. Later on you could go back to using your regular fertilizer or maybe use the Miracid once a month just to make sure the petunias are not too low on iron. Keep in mind that I'm no expert and this is simply what I would probably try. Good luck with the petunias, hope they turn out beautiful! Art

Thuja Green Giant turning yellow and brown..what to do?

Thanks Dave... Yep, the guy who sold them to me when I bought them said "I think they're getting too much water, they need to get in the ground" So I bought them and took them home and put them in the ground. Then today he looked at the clippings and said "you haven't watered them since Saturday, you need to water them every other day and babysit them" Total contradiction.....It's apparent he has no clue, he's setting up a "blame the buyer" excuse to not honor the warranty. It fries my bacon....and yes, he seemed like an idiot. I'd rather trust you guys here who have dealt with Thuja Green Giants before. Is it possible that at my elevation (about 6500 ft.) that they could have plenty of water, but are being killed by the sun due to higher sun exposure rates due to altitude? Are they sensitive to that? (as in it's easier for a person go get a sunburn at high altitude) By the way, this particular nursery was the only one of 5 in my general area that even carried the Green Giants. Maybe that should tell me something.

All I can say is wow, thanks for all the ideas and help. So, the new window went in and it is taller, so my GC made sure to carefully remove and store the extra tiles for me. We'll see this weekend how many I have extra now. I thought I'd maybe send one to Chippy to see if they have a match in NJ. Also, I can use one for our re-glazer, if I need to still go that route. I have the pedestal sink in hand at the house, so for now we are good. I'll let you know how the tiles end up. Please keep sending the suggestions!!

Please Help! My Bamboo Plant is Turning Yellow

    Q

    Comments (18)
It is not a single plant. It is a series of dracaena cuttings bundled together to create an impression of a full, thick plant. Typically, most dracaenas - and certainly 'lucky bamboo' - grows as a bare single stem with a cluster of leaves at the top. Cutting them back and effectively cutting off all the leaves on an evergreen plant has seriously affected their ability to photosynthesize. And if that is coupled with a consistent lack of any fertilization, it is not surprising that some stalks are dying off. I'd consider myself lucky that the remaining stalks seem to have recovered from this radical treatment and are now pushing new leaf growth. The plant(s) is not dying....it just suffered a major setback. Tease loose the roots, separate out the yellow stalks and toss and then replant the green (no ties!). With proper care, it should be good for another 17 years!

Your house....so.stinking.cute! x10! Sounds like you’re after a more subdued look. How about a dark rust/brown that ties into the steps and roof tiles? A black door will absorb heat and possibly warp, just to be aware. Can’t wait to see what you do!

I love the tiles with the blue. However, I just cant see them on your house. I think tiles similar to what are already on there, and then pick a trim color from them. The house looks so inviting right now, however, I would like all trim the same color, not all different.

OK, so here is the direction we "think" we are going (so much for more elegant/classy look LOL) We do want to keep the "fun" aspect and not be too boring as the neighbourhood is quite eclectic and full of fun color so we are thinking a pop of pale chartreuse might be the way to go (so much for the girl afraid of color haha) something like this maybe (not necessarily this exact one) ??? ..

If we go this way ... what color for the door ???

  • decoenthusiaste

Be sure the chartreuse has the intensity necessary to stand up to the deep blue.

    @Beth H. :.. love, love, love ... thank you.

I was only thinking of the chartreuse for the trim around the windows and to do the front door in a dark navy blue - something like Nightfall by Benjamin Moore (I will have to see it in the daylight though)

If you zoom in on the house, you can see the yellow and green are a verticle line either side of the window (the window on the right of the photo) so the blue tiles would replace those and then a chartreuse trim (love the ones you showed me and yes a more saturated tone is needed after the "pea soup photo lol) ) and then the door a dark blue but totally open.

Thank you so much for all of your wonderful ideas

piaa, ok, so I went a little crazy w/the photoshop and diff door colors and decor options!

Are you doing the tile around the window like this?

I gave you a blue door, (and I really like the style of this door and the iron hardware) and added the cobalt ceramic pots. blk/white address plaque. Tried to photoshop some black trim around the tile/window.

(i've posted a bunch of diff color combos, but I think I like this one the best. I'll find you a match for this blue if you like it) did you notice the trim on my front door photo? looks black. It's this color:

I think this would be perfect for all your trim where you have the green and the orange. redo it in this one.

BTW, have you seen the colored landscape glass? I actually have this in diff colors. the cobalt and aqua would look beautiful w/all your greenery.

However, I would trim back some of the monstera/split leaf philodendren you have near your window. It's hiding a good portion of the house.

See this aqua door w/the black trim? I'd try that on yours everywhere you have the green and orange.

And, take some extra tiles and set them in your walkway if you can. ^

I love this door w/iron hardware. gave you a better Spanish light. this would be a midnight blue shade.

the fuchsia bougainvillea in a terra cotta pot looks nice w/the blue tones. You'd have to imagine the green trim painted out in either a wrought iron color (BM Wrought Iron, which is what I used on my trim. shown in the pic w/my front door) or the same midnight blue color.

Can you DIY paint? look at this door. could you do something like this w/your door in the other blue? this one is a little too sky blue for your tile.

But if you could find a door like this wood one (you could also leave it wood) and do the paint treatment on it, you could do any color you like! seal it w/a clear coat, and you're done!

here's the chartreuse color. the green throws it off, so try to imagine soem other trim color

here's that door I photoshopped in the first photo. I really like this color. see the porch? see how they inset the tiles on the riser portion? I think if you did that, or tried adding some tiles in the walkway, it would really add a lot to the look.

BTW, here are the color matches for the door. the reason this looks so good w/the tile is because these blues all have purple in them. I think Breathtaking is dead on. Yacht Club Blue is a close 2nd.

if you go w/this color, do the iron hardware, new light, and see if this door color works as a trim around the window. wherever you have the green/orange trim, try painting it w/this blue.

If you don't like that, try the wrought iron color.

@Beth H. : OMG Beth you are amazing - thank you.

My biggest fear is making a mistake with the outside because currently it just makes me happy and surprisingly the colors work but everything is in disrepair and as we are not really green and yellow people we figured now is the time to make a change.

You are correct, the new blue tile will be a strip either side of the window (currently there is a strip of yellow and green tile) so looking for a fun color to paint all of the trim which is currently painted the green and we will change the color of the door.

Because we are in an historic district we have to keep the door as is - no embellishments, no changing the stained glass etc but we can change the paint color and door hardware and we can change the tile around the window because it is not original to the house (we will also be replacing the front steps with something that isn't Home Depot tile that molds so easily but will keep the same color) I have purchased a new light fixture already and will replace the mailbox with a metal one

The yard gets zero sun because of the oak trees so pots will have to contain fake plants - which I don’t like but it does need something I agree and I love the blue (I acutually have 2 of them in that color ready to be used once construction is complete)

I love the second door color (the one with the arched white entrance) but not sure how it will work with the blue tile? One question I have is should I paint the trim black with our tile and use a fun pop of color on the door or the fun pop on the trim and a darker door ? (I was told black would be boring and I need to branch out of my comfort zone - which is not wrong bec ause I am a neurtal gal but this house deserves some color I think)

I so don’t want to screw this up - I want people to still love the house as they drive by - a mix of elegant but fun (is that even a thing LOL)

Thank you again for all of your help

These color combos would be nice for your walkway

    Vero Beach · More Info

What I think would look fantastic for a walkway is the tile pattern in the floor above lined with these color flowers in a neated-up yard

Put the new color on the ground, leave the house itself alone. If you are allowed to tile the risers of the front steps, that would look nice as parts of a new front yard and walk.

we are not really green and yellow people we figured now is the time to make a change.

(why is everyone pressuring her to keep it as is?)

she's wants to use the blue and white tiles. paired w/the green and yellow, it would look like a funhouse, so no, those colors need to go.

piaa, are you talking about this one?

I think you should paint the door this color, and then pick the same, or a slightly darker one for all of the trim. (I believe these are Behr colors)

You need a blue that leans into the violet family. it will match the tile. any of the other blues really don't work. (for instance, blue/greens do NOT go w/that tile. An Emerald green would be a nice compimentary color, but a teal or turquoise blue will not work. )

All of the colors above would be considered "periwinkle" tones.

You could do the wrought iron color (not black, black would be too harsh) on the trim and the door if you like. But I think one of the blues above would look perfect w/the tile.

as for the pots, lightly prune the trees to get some filtered sun, if you can. if not, you could plant varieties of ferns or coleus in the pots. no need for fake flowers.

Since you're changing the front steps, bring in the Saltillo tile or something similar, and inset the blue tile (like i've shown you pics)

You see how this house did the tile around the door? notice the tile on the risers w/the saltillo tile. look at the spanish style lights, the iron hardware on the door.

They went w/a bright turquoise on this one. you could do your blue to match the door. or the Wrought Iron.

or, did you have something else in mind?

why don't you get a couple of samples and try them?

what I would first do is get some primer and prime those yellows and greens (you're going to have to prime them to get good coverage of the next color) and then try a few samples.

@Beth H. : Hi Beth - I just love this one - it looks so elegant to me but in a fun way with the pop on the door…

I went ahead and ordered the tiles as the more we looked at them the more we love them and we ordered extra to add some to the step (and yes we will do saltillo tile)

I went to the store after looking at your photos and came home with about 50 card chips and so far like this combo .. “In The Navy” or “Iron Ore” both from SW for the trim and “Porch Ceiling” from SW (possibly) for the door.

As we have to keep the cover over the door would you paint the wood (that holds it up) white or do in the dark trim color do you think.

Definitely will get the blue pots (I already have 2) and use succulents/ferns etc and we will have a landscape specialist help with the landscape - although we do love the naturalness and not manicured look that we currently have.

I can’t thank you enough for your help - I am so giddy right now as this has been a HUGE worry for me screwing it up (totally gutting the inside and adding 2 bathrooms and pool and a second story and all the decisions that come with that has been a piece of cake compared with the worry of the outside colors LOL)

    Exactly.

I’ve never thought people followed advice on the internet. They do what they want. So I say what I want and ignore people who try to silence me.

I don’t think the house is improved by changing the tiles to blue when I see the pictures people are posting here. The homeowner doesn’t have a lot of confidence in the plan and is dreading making a mistake.

My advice is to focus on the necessity of cleaning up the yard, saving the trees and repairing the broken walk.

I figure I’m being read by an adult who doesn’t need someone running interference for them.

My life will still be happy if my advice is rejected.

Fwiw, the house is perfect as is, which is why others stop to look at it.

  • User

Ps: I just read the entire thread. There is no ”everyone” pressuring anybody. I’m the only person — one person — saying leave the house as it is. (It needs repairs but I wouldn’t put in blue without a being sure of what the result will be.) The current color scheme makes the owners smile. Best plan is not to move ahead with changing the house unless they are sure smiles will be the outcome. They didn’t smile when they got the last batch of tiles.

    Do the yard for now.

ital, didn't really point a figer at you, per se. and while no one has come out said, "don't touch it", others have question whether she really needs to change it. I guess you were the only one that was more forthright.

    no big.

she's said repeatedly she doesn't like green/yellow, and has already bought the tiles.

If she had said, "Should I change it?" It would be diff. But she sounds like she's already made up her mind, so instead of going against her, I try and work w/her choices.

I love the yard. yes it needs a little clean up. does the yellow and green work w/the yard? yes absolutely.

However, as she has stated, those tiles and colors are not original to the home. Back in the 20's they didn't paint those spanish bungalows in those colors.

sorry, these colors are just not conducive to the homes historical nature. While 'pretty', I think there are better alternatives to the look of this house.

So I don't know why the persistance in keeping something that was never original.

I happen to think the blue looks better w/the terra cotta, and also works w/the front yard. (but yes, you're right, it does need tending to. )

Thank you everyone for your amazing suggestions (I am a little overwhelmed by options LOL)

Just a few things - as we are in a historic home, and governed by the rules of the historic committee, these are some of the “challenges” (if you will) ..

    • We can’t change the door but we can paint it
    • We can’t change/remove the walkway (no other materials unless we go before the board which might be a year process so for now we will leave it the same
    • We can’t replace or remove the S barrel roof tiles
    • We can’t change the wood “supports” that hold up the eyebrows over the door - but we can paint them
    • We can’t change the windows or size/style of the trim
    • We can’t change the step layout but we can replace with a better quality tile (so salitto it is)
    • The amazing oak trees have to stay but cast so much shade its very difficult for anything except the ivy to grow (but we LOVE the trees and wouldn’t change a thing
    • We can replace the tiles either side of the windows (as they aren’t original to the house)

When I said “I am afraid of screwing up” it was more geared towards that I don’t have a vision for color and what would look good where (neutral and an all white/beige interior is my style) so putting colors together that will look good is not my strong quality - also we just moved from the Caribbean so are drawn to the different shades of blue and our other favorite place would be the homes of Santorini with the white walls and blue trim so I definitely think blue is our “subconscious” color palette and if a decision needs to be made (whether it be in cars or clothing etc) we always are lead down the blue path ... and we do wish to make this home ours and not live with someone else's vision

Thanks again everyone for all of your suggestions - keep them coming if you like - and ps: the original photo was the listing photo and although the yard is a work in progress (we are definitely waiting until construction is over as currently we have a port-a-potty in the front yard LOL) we did hire a local well know arborist who has taken care of the oak trees and will come up with a plan for the front soon :)

And @Beth H. : thank you again for all of your wonderful suggestions and please let me know about the color for the supports when you have a chance (if you don't mind) and if you think the colors I picked work :)

  • RedRyder

I think the blue tiles you love, the dark trim and one of the violet-leaning blues @Beth H suggested for the door is a winning combination. I also agree you should prime the trim now since you definitely need to so that. It gives your eyes the neutral palette to “see” your new colors better. Before you try black on the trim, paint some on poster board strips and tape it to the house. If it looks too harsh, you haven’t created a nightmare of having to re-prime over it.
Personally, I would do a deep navy for the trim and the Yacht Club Blue on the door, but that’s me. And don’t use fake greenery. There are plenty of shade-happy options for your house.
Post photos of the inside! Now that you talked about it……. :)

    piaa, ok,

Iron Ore has too much brown in it.

    black magic might be better.

Try Wrought Iron. scroll up and look at my front porch. that's wrought iron

I think In the Navy has too much green in it.

If you really want a blue trim, then choose a bold cobalt color. those navys tend to have greens and blacks mixed w/them. again, you want a blue that leans on the violet spectrum.

You could take the tile into the paint store and have them match that darkest blue color.

Or, I'd stick w/a dark charcoal or soft blacks for the trim

So you want the light blue for the door? could you shift ever so slightly to a periwinkle? I think it would look better w/your tile.

can you see the slight difference in how this color compliments the blue tile a bit better? Because your tile has a lot of violet in it, I think a light blue w/purple will work better.

I left Porch Ceiling in this pic so you can compare the tones.

all three of the new ones have a touch of violet

    I really like Lupine too.

In the photoshops below, I stuck in your tile, and diff door colors.

I want you to notice how they did the eyebrow over the door. It's all white. do you like that?

    Here's your Porch Ceiling:

    Perfect Periwinkle

    Lupine

    Celestial

can you tell the diff at all? why don't you grab a few samples? you'll have to see how they look w/your lighting.

these all work too, but they're Behr colors.

Behr sample pots are only $3. they can do a SW color match in their samples, but just know it won't be exact to the SW paint w/their tints. SW samples are 3X the price (but you get more)

Please can I have some of your staghorns!! lmao.

Your mock-ups are amazing and I did go to SW and buy some samples yesterday (boy they love me in there as well as Benjamin Moore haha) but now I am fixated on the door color I posted here but I couldn't find a match for love nor money (is that an English saying ?) so do you have a clue what it might be (where did you find the photo maybe they say in the details?) - hubby loves it also - not sure it would be perfect for the house but it looks to be bright, yet soft and sophisticated at the same time (the blue sample I picked up yesterday might be a bit baby boy nursery but it's not bad) and because we are in shade if some of the colors are a little on the darker side they can look muddy and not as vibrant as they would be in sun so this might be perfect.

Thanks again for all of your help - hope you are having a great weekend

that's a tough color to match. a lot of the aqua shades have too much green

this is what I was able to locate.

Mineral Springs is a bit darker, but close in tone.

Since this is a photo that's prob been shopped, it may be difficult to match this exactly.

the two at the bottom are closer in tone to the picture you like. but that tone of blue really doesn't work as well w/your tile like the other violet/blues.

I still stand by the violet - blue tones

just bring home some samples and try them out on a spare piece of wood or board so you can see how it looks next to your stucco w/your lighting.

    Pleasant looking home and yard.

Would keep the exterior walls the same off white (no yellow hue) but choose only one color for your trim ... perhaps a dark green ... and then you could keep the yellow screen door trim and paint your front entry door the same yellow color as the focal point for the front of your home without creating a "cacophony" of colors

Would you be able to change the awnings?

Put an awning over the left window the width of the window and add a separate awning over the entire (indent) right front side of the house using awnings that don't have visible supports such as the one now on the right does.

Shown is the "inspiration" house (thanks to Beth for posting this) and the color I found today (Behr Tahitian Sky) and we definitely will be addressing the landscaping once the construction is finished and definitely will be adding the blue pots with real plants (haha)

Trim will be the dark navy/black (so the current green will be the dark navy/black) with the blue tiles either side of the windows and then the door in the Behr Tahitian Sky - my only question ( @Beth H. : and everyone else) would you paint the wood supports that hold up the ceiling over the door white or the dark navy/black ? and I guess I have to paint the threshold the dark navy/black color also (I thought about a white marble threshold like in the photo as I like how the black is not completely surrounding the door) but with the salitto tiles it might be too many different colors ?

If you're willing to change the door color, too, going with the blues, as suggested by Beth H. : is a great idea.

did you see one of the example homes where they painted everything white (over the door)? It's very similar to yours

    what do you think?

I don't know if you can replace the supports and make them real wood. that might be an option to redo them. I think a nice, natural medium wood stain would look nice w/the white/black and blue.

If not, I'd try all white, and maybe try the supports in the black (or whatever dark color you're using)

just try it both ways. it's only paint

maybe look into redoing the supports w/something a bit better, less clunky.

@Beth H. : - yes I saw that photo (thank you) and that's where I got the idea from to just paint it all white (I think we might start that way and then paint them dark if it needs some contrast_ - unfortunately we can't replace or remove the supports they have to stay the size they are because of Historic - I wish I could make them less clunky but it is what it is so we are embracing them :)

if the boards are rotten, you're allowed to replace them. you could have dry rot. the historic section does allow damaged wood to be replaced.

and if you have new ones cut almost the same, it shouldn't be an issue.

But, no big deal. I think if you match it to the stucco color it will look way better.

I like your front door. before painting it the new color, take a sander to it and try and get off a good portion of the white paint. start w/a 60 or 80 grit, work up to 220, if you can.

it will look better if you start w/a somewhat smoother surface.

If that's the original brass hardware, you can boil it in hot water to loosen the grime, and then use a metal polish on it to remove the tarnish.

    is the screen staying?

@Beth H. : Thank you - yes the plan is to sand and get the best surface possible and no the screen is going (thank goodness) and thank you for the info on how to clean the hardware - will definately give that a go .. excited to see how this turns out

Is this Southeast Florida? Your home is so cute! Such a charmer! I have a 1925 Mediterranean historic home in West Palm Beach.

Have you considered doing the trim a slightly darker cream/beige to accent the house and restoring the door back to natural wood? I think a pink bougainvillea would look amazing blooming over the right window.

I always look at Zillow homes listed and recently sold for inspiration! Here's a couple of examples.

I had to also share this because it is one of my favorites and on palm beach.

@Lyndsey Adamo - I am in Flamingo Park (West Palm Beach) and I agree bougainvillea would be fabulous but they need full sun to grow and we have full shade because of the oak trees :)

@piaa Sounds beautiful! We are in Northboro Park Historic District. If your screen door is original I would consider having it restored with the door. I have a local contact that does amazing custom work if you aren't doing it yourself. If interested DM me!

@Lyndsey Adamo - how do I DM on Houzz (lol) The screen is definitely not original but I would love your contact for the door - hubby is a builder but not sure we have time to take it down to where it needs to be to repaint properly.

    Thanks so much
