Using clay pots in full sun, high heat SOS

Oakley

Last year the soil got so hot in a clay pot it burnt my finger and killed my plants. I put the Zinnias I grew from seed in larger clay pots, and the soil on top is warming up pretty good and it's only in the 70's. I don't want to transplant them again. Would putting mulch on top of the soil help? The pot itself doesn't feel warm yet.

Zinnias need a lot of sun.
