Living room feedback. How would you improve this room?
Comments (43)I've been under the weather for the last few days, so wasn't able to act on any of the additional suggestions until today. Thank you so much to everyone for the feedback, pointing out both the good and the bad. Today I moved a few things around. I decided to concentrate my efforts of lighting, as I think this will help us to enjoy the room more. The new additions are just stand ins, while I look for the right lamps and plants etc. I will also look for better wall art by the love seat and go to Benjamin Moore to look for a warm neutral that's lighter for the walls. I also liked the suggestions to replace the several small accessories with larger ones. And also to try to incorporate the window seat into the room more somehow. I was thinking of trying more colorful cushions on it, to tie it in and make the eye travel back there more. I will keep the points about the tables in mind for when it's time to look at new furniture. Thank you again so much! I feel so much better about this room already! I will start a new thread if/when I have specific questions about lamps or pillows. Thank you!!...See MoreWhat to improve kitchen design, but don't know how! So frustrated!!!
Comments (23)itsourca, my dining room would be rather large is I put it in the living room. Not sure what my view would be from the DR. I wouldn't want to look at kitchen mess from the DR. I don't know. I will give it more thought. suezbell, in the process of trying to remodel our kitchen, I have allowed myself to dream. So I am imagining my kitchen in the space of my living room. I'm sorry, but I can't do it. I am not sure where my living room would go, but most of all, my LR window gets a minimal amount of sunlight before the sun swings over. I would find that depressing. Also, my south side has no windows. I don't quite understand your second post. The divider looks nice. Not sure if you realize that there is no wall between my LR and DR and those rooms are at different levels. My LR and FR also have a fireplace. Design Girl. I hear what you are saying. Years ago we went to an open house. That house had exactly the same layout as mine. We believe that the kitchen was renovated in order to sell the house. They had removed the family room wall and put an island in. At first sight it looked very nice. But there was no furniture on the first floor. I quickly took a couple of pictures and I can show them to you. Picture of kitchen while I am standing in the FR. They moved the doorway to the dining room to allow for a larger fridge. They removed he wall oven and put in a slide in oven and stove. There are minimal cupboards. Looks like the pots and pans have to be stored in the island. Pantry is still in the hall. Family room. Photo probably taken from the same spot as I took kitchen picture. Not sure if other walls had been removed. I didn't think FR furniture would fit very well in order to be able allow access to the sliding door. I considered that the house would be desirable for a young couple with small children. But for four adults with different schedules, I would like to have more privacy and quiet in my FR (my room pretty much). The kitchen can be a noisy place! Yvonnecmartin, I think eating all meals in the dining room is a possibility. Partim, my FR is my TV room. That's probably why I don't really want to remove the wall between the FR and the kitchen. So you are saying put a wall between my DR and LR and extend the kitchen area into the dining area. Have one table and one island and not close any doors in the kitchen? I think I could see something like that working. Our LR and DR windows need upgrading. Maybe put in a sliding door or french doors in the DR?...See MoreHow would you improve the exterior of this Garrison Colonial?
Comments (9)Yikes! Removing four large trees? Hope you have some budget left. :-( I think you can achieve your inspiration pic. Love how the paint on your brick has weathered off. Re the azaleas, once you cut down the trees, you should have more light. Cut the azaleas practically to the ground and they will come back in a few years to full bushes again. If not, then start over. Spraying them for azalea scale once they are back will help them thrive. Lots of fun projects ahead for you....See MoreHow would you improve the curb appeal of this house design?
Comments (30)I would push back if the builder is suggesting that none of the window sizes can be changed on this elevation due to code. Codes do vary from place to place, but they generally have a few common features regarding windows: minimum open size for egress i bedrooms, and minimum natural light and ventilation in living spaces. Other than the bedroom, none of the other windows on this elevation should be tied to code in that they cannot be changed. I agree that at minimum the 1st floor bath and kitchen window should be the same height. I also think they should both be the same type of window. I understand the convenience of casement windows over a kitchen sink, so I would do a single casement in the bathroom too. On the second floor I would make the bathroom another casement (for rhythm and consistency) and make it the same size as the top half of the landing window. Beyond that, landscaping, exterior color choice, a nice window box under the first floor bathroom and kitchen windows, a small paver patio to expand the front porch, and some quality details on the porch posts, railing, door and outdoor lights can all improve and add character to a simple form....See MoreJoseph Martinez
