Is the GC taking responsibility for this? Have you confirmed this in writing? If they are, and have confirmed this in writing etc. then let the GC call the shots - they're on the hook for repairs and if that means replacing your counters, then that's what that means. As long as whoever is doing the repair work stands behind it and ultimately will reimburse you or replace the counters, then a) make sure it's all agreed in writing and b) let them do what they say they need to do. Ensure that the measure of success is indicated - how much of the stain do they have to remove to be 'good'? What if the spot is still visible be it as a darkened area or difference in the final finish (etched etc). BTW - your marble counter top is polished? It's not going to stay that way for long. We have 50 sq ft of marble counters in the kitchen (white) and it's honed. More typical for counters as etching isn't as visible. One drop of toothpaste or anything acidic will be a very very visible spot.

Don't replace the marble. The stain can be corrected. There are several ways to do this. Is the marble honed or polished -looks honed in the pic. Coffee can be acidic so make sure it isn't an etch mark as well. Best thing to do is hire a stone refinisher and bill it back to the contractor. I don't see why you would want to do it. Don't give yourself a heart attack over it either. If you have to do it your self here are some methods. Using hydrogen peroxide (not the one in your medicine chest that 3% volume)you will need 30-40% volume hydrogen peroxide. Mix using flour, diatomaceous earth or baby powder unscented into a paste and place over the stains. Cover with plastic and let sit for six hours or so. remove the plastic and don't touch until dry. Then remove it all and see what you get. Another way is using a store bought poultice and applying that. You can also put down some paper towels about eight to ten sheets pad and place some bleach on top of it. Let it sit on the stain for about an hour and then lift up and rinse well. You can dilute the bleach if you like. It wont damage the stone either way.

Wow-the pic is good-installer and store new prior to the installation these were stained?They should step up and replace them. Anyway my thought is these tiles were packed face to face in the box and maybe they were packed when still wet and this caused the staining? How big is the floor and I am guessing its in a bathroom. Are all the tiles stained? The acetone is probably the wrong solvent to use for this not because it will hurt the marble only because it evaporates too fast. Try using a poultice made from bleach or 40% hydrogen peroxide. Mix either one of these chemicals with baby powder or diatomaceous earth. Never mix two chemicals together only use one of them. Mix it like a wet peanut butter and place it over the stain. Cover it overnight with saran wrap and then just pull up the saran and let it dry out, could take a few days then remove the product and see what you get. I would try the peroxide first. I still think it is oxidation and another product that sometimes helps remove that is iron out. Mix with water and left on the stain for a day. Could be a good idea to have a stone refinisher come in and look at it as well. As I am writing this however I wonder why you are concerned or even trying to remove this stain. The store should be replacing the tile and the contractor should be offering to remove it and replace with a unstained product. You did not create this problem why should you rack your brains out trying to correct it. Stu Rosen

Can you really handle etches? --- Reminds me: See links below (I don't know how to post pix on HouzzGW yet): - the big etch was a result of the spillage from my countertop compost container (before I take it out to the compost bins). Well it was too full, and the brown "juice" (high acidity from all the fruit peel, etc) puddled overnight. When I first wiped it up, it was a pretty obvious brownish stain. I wasn't worrying about the etches then because I was totally distraught with this awful brown blob on my gorgeous whitish countertop. But after ???a week, it slowly faded and disappeared completely. I didn't do anything special to remove it. Wish I had taken a picture initially. So it seems that certain stains, if it ever happens, may slowly fade away.
