Ariala Sun King
Comments (15)well rouge, it looks like my style of planting is what you might want for your aralia to stay small, because mine has survived but def NOT become big. I have it in open shade (no direct sun) and growing up through a ground cover of yellow and green euonymus. yours is robust for sure. i alrdy grow quite a few yellow leaved woodies, but we will be picking up many more this month from Broken Arrow. The aralia sun king reminds me a little of the yellow leaved philadelphus, though the mock orange has smaller leaves....See Moreupdate: update: seed clean out - going once...going twice

Comments (64)I've got some ASK for a very shaded area. From what I read online I thought that in the shade in my short growing season it would probably top out at 4' tall and wide, but NHBabs pointed me to this thread because of Thyme2dig's enormous specimen. I skimmed, so maybe I missed it, but how much sun does T2D's get? Larger than 4' would be great for my location, but it will determine if I put one or two there. If 7' wide is the norm in deep shade then I should only plant one. Also, I am at minimum 2 weeks behind everybody else, and possibly more. On the coast or Maine our summers come late. I know it's a fast grower, but our season is shorter....See MoreAralia Sun King
Comments (9)Very different from any native aralias. First, it is fully herbaceous. And it flowers quite late in the season so berries may or may not have time to ripen. Deadheading would eliminate any concern of self seeding or spreading by birds. It does grow to a significant proportion (6'x6', possibly more) and can produce some rhizomatous sprouting. And it has bright yellow foliage, so not at all a plant for full sun! And because it prefers at the very least partial shade, it does make a great companion planting for hostas....See MoreGardenHo_MI_Z5
