Mango tree seedling. Growing tips appreciated.

This little tree sprouted May 16th of this year. I am already amazed at how much it's grown!
Right now it is indoors, south facing window.
I am in Az. Zone 9b.
Our summers are pretty harsh. Is it better off kept inside for awhile, or move it outside?
If I need to move it out, part shade? Or graduate it to full sun?
It is in a 5-1-1 mix with a little extra pumice.
Right now the only fertilizer I have is Expert Gardener all purpose water soluable , 24-8-16
@greenman28 this is my second attempt. How is yours doing? Feel free to share pics! :-)
One leaf is twice the size of the others. Lol.. Is that normal?
Also colr is off in this picture. It is a nice bright green.

i wasnt aware you could contact peeps direct through this forum ...

anyway ... i would never place a tree in a black pot where the pot could heat up in the sun ... if and when you go to sun.. put the pot behind something so its shaded ... cool.. but the plant is in sun ....

and i doubt you need constant fert with a tree ... unless in watering.. you run its all out the bottom every time you flood the pot.. and i doubt you are doing that indoors ...

lastly . i would not repot this time of year.. especially if you do take it outside.. why stress it ... and then take it outside ans stress it.. etc ...

and do harden it off properly if it goes outside ...

this is all general tree lore ... the rules dont really need to vary by plant in most cases ...

otherwise.. i dont do AZ and i dont do mango ..

There are tall growing varieties and there are not so tall growing ones. Probably your best course of action is to let it grow as tall as possible to get a thickened trunk then cut it very low. That way you should get a number of side shoots/branches. If you cut it early with a thin trunk you're likely to get fewer branches. Having it up against a fence reduces the area branches have to spread out and is what promotes a taller tree. If you had a grafted tree those don't grow as tall as the ungrafted ones.

Jasmine, sorry to hear about some of your plants...I feel your pain! Good luck and hope they recover also. Hey Js, Night before last was really bad... somewhere around 27Â° for at least 5 hours...last night's forecast also called for 26Â°-27Â°, thank God that didn't happen. I got lucky, I think it only made it to 32Â° for about an hour or so, and by 7am it was 34Â°. The trees all got covered and lights were put underneath them, so no further damage that I saw this morning. But the damage was "severe" on a couple of the trees from the freeze from two weeks ago, just hoping for a recovery for now. The trunk looks nice and healthy. The leaves all are severly "burnt"...all brown, starting to defoliate. Just hoping it will re-flush around March/April? Sorry to hear about your citrus blooms, I also lost a 90% of my blooms off my potted Meyer lemon. Lot of leaves, yellowed/browned are falling off. Glad your other trees fared well! I'm glad for you...At least someone will have mangos and lychees. Wish me luck! Please no more frost/freeze for the rest of the year...I want our Fl weather back!

I got to meet mostro by chance, when I spotted the tops of his mango trees when I was driving by his neighborhood. Always been told that I'm just wasting my money planting mango trees here in Jax. So when I saw the mango trees, I got really curious and went to ask about it. He's a very nice guy, allowed me to check out the trees and answered all my questions. His mango trees are beautiful and productive. I wish I had my phone when I was there to take a couple of pics to show here. I didn't know about this forum until after I met him. I ran into this discussion (and recognize the pics) doing research if there was other people in Jax that has mango trees and what soil is best for keeping mango trees in pots. I'll take pics next time I go talk to him to ask for his process on protecting the trees when it gets cold as I have 2 mango plants now. Mallika & Kesar :)

new growth is commonly colored like that. they can take down to the 40s without dying. i wouldnt worry about the old growth dying, as you move it from one location to another the old growth will die off and the new growth will be more adapted to its new environment if you are not aware, the fruit, if it does fruit, will not be like the fruit you sampled, it most likely will be undesirable to eat. if you were looking forward to harvesting fruit i would recommend growing it for a season just to get some over-wintering experience under your belt then perhaps look for a good dwarf grafted tree in the spring like Pickering that can stay indefinitely in a 20 gallon container and give you fruit in a few years.

Good morning!

My little mango is fully outdoors now, despite the last week of nights in the low 40F's. A bit of neem, a bit of leafburn, a repotting, and it's doing pretty well. It hasn't moved much since the repotting, but it's finally active again and a new flush of leaves is about to ensue!

Your seedling is looking great. I'm glad you decided to try again! Took me three tries to get the seed to fully root and not just rot.

Repotted nearly two months ago (3/27), and the weather stayed cold. I should have waited for warm weather to repot, and it would have responded faster.

Actually I do run it all out the bottom when I water. I set my plants on a heavy screen over a bucket.

I water and leave them sit for awhile.

So is it in full sun now?

I was lucky to get the one seed! I tried 6 and all but one rotted! How are you sprouting them?

I tried the damp paper towel and they all got moldy and gross! lol

I have a few more I want to try to sprout.

Temps have been a roller coaster still here too. We dropped 10 degrees in a day and our over night low was 57. lol

Jo Jo, I had mine in a damp paper towel in an open ziplock until it swelled up and turned bright green, then I potted it. I put a piece of plastic wrap over the pot to maintain moisture until it began to send up leaves. I peeled off the brown papery stuff, too, since that seemed to trap mold on my previous attempts.

I will try that. I had them in a sealed box. I did try and remove as much of the brown papery stuff first.
