More spring flowers while waiting for daylilies

Scapes are beginning to pop up all over the garden--Stoke the Fire, Small World TNT, Heavenly Bengal Tiger, Lava Flow, Buddy's Betsy, Curious Cutie, Geometric Wizard to name a few. Dumortieri was in bloom today but it wasn't picture worthy.

Here are some other flowers in bloom.

This is Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Beauty' commonly called cross vine.

This unnamed peony is very short lived but was pretty today.

All of our irises are unnamed.

Vinca major variegata

This is one of our miniature beds. The rose on the trellis is a seedling from Mr. Bluebird, which is a hybrid multiflora. We grew this seedlings over 20 years ago. It's cute but the flowers don't last long. We hope the daylilies in this bed grow better this year. We took out a big black walnut tree that partially shaded it.

Everyday we are getting closer to bloom here.

Color in the garden is always welcome and you have a lot of it! And just look at your dianthus!! So pretty!!

Your Spring flowers are magical. I really like the second and third irises. Your dianthus planted with daylilies looks pretty!

Thank you! I am hoping the raised beds will keep grass from creeping in. And it also hides the hedge stumps! The iris are acually going-they have been running amok and needed thinned so I peeled some off the outside of the clump and potted them for now. And the plant in the middle of the bed is Solomon's Seal. It gets little bell-like flowers in the spring. I'd like to get ahold of some varigated Solomon Seal, but found this at a plant sale in May and was happy to get it.

Florence - the old-fashioned ones (I'm thinking you mean Syringa vulgaris) can be grown in containers too if they start out in one as a baby! I bought both my lilacs as 2 gallon, 18" tall plants. That earlier pic was of "James McFarlane" (Syringa prestonia). I also have a "Miss Kim" (Syringa patula - below). I only bought those because they happened to be on sale at the nurseries I visited and I decided to try them. Didn't see any of the other types other than "President Grevy", which is a Syringa vulgaris, for sale at the time. What's good about my 2 is that they are later bloomers and have a lesser chance of getting blasted by late frosts - something that inpacts container shrubs more than ground ones since the container soil tends to warm faster than the ground in spring.

If you are going to divide them into individual plants, that will be a bigger shock to them. You will still probably get some bloom. You will get more bloom by dividing into quarters. The sooner you can do it, the better the plant will be I think. It all depends on the plant. I have a few daylilies that I have to cut completely apart, & they can get stressed. Most I can wiggle the roots apart pretty easily & if I'm careful they aren't stressed to much & recover nicely.

Thanks Kay. I just recalled what it's name is.....but Huldine is a nice try, although smaller in bloom size. I went to the Garden Crossings website (which is where I purchased it years ago) and saw they still sell it. The name is 'Candida'. (Sometimes just seeing the name brings my memory back from the dead....lol). It and Huldine look similiar but Candida has much larger blooms at 9 inches across. I know it is hard to tell from my photo that they are that large. What I love about this one is that it blooms twice.....once in May into June and then again in late summer.

I noticed the Dianthus too. It does surprisingly well around here too. I like your raised planter and how neat to grow a rose from seed to bloom. It all will come together very soon now on your daylilies I'm thinking............Maryl

I was surprised that the dianthus come back every year. Occasionally a clump will die out, but I just plant another one there. We are putting in a small dip mini bed and I plan to put dianthus between them too.

Beautiful colors. The garden bed looks good. I have to go and lookup Bignonia capreolata.
