Problems staining Hickory?? Anyone hear this?
Comments (8)I work with wood flooring. I have not stained hickory, but I am not surprised that folks find it resistant to penetrating stains, as the wood is dense. The only place on the boards that will accept pigment well will be the soft wood of the grain pattern. As a consequence, the floor will only become more busy-looking, because the staining will accentuate the grain pattern. The problem that some people have with peeling of finish over stain has a lot to do with the finish not adhering to the pigment that rests on the wood after the vehicle (usually hydrocarbons) has evaporated. Unfortunately, stains do not include much in the formula that resembles a binder; little binder equals little sticking power. A piece of peeled finish will carry with it the pigment the finish was applied over; the pigment layer in such a case is the weak layer. Some stains include more binder than others. The stain I use almost exclusively is DriFast by Bona that I believe is a thin oil-modified urethane with pigment added. I have had no peeling issues whatsoever using that product in combination with their finish materials. A wood floor finish expert will know about 'water popping' and sanding schedules that will prepare any wood for a proper staining. Some of us in the industry have been experimenting with paint slurries as a staining media, especially where a very dark result is desired. It works, because of the binders in the paint film. However, anyone who attempts such a thing had better do the necessary testing to determine whether or not the chosen products work well as a floor finishing technique and are compatible....See Morehickory cabinets with coffee stain antiquity kitchen paint colors pain

Comments (3)If you like your current colour then go ahead and put down a new version of it. If you want something different then I would go lighter. I love the look of red oak in the 'buff'. It is a pretty wheat/sand coloured wood. So long as you work with a high-end water based polyurethane that does NOT yellow, you will have a very pretty 'pale wood' floor without much effort. Your existing finish appears to be oil based (or oil modified) which makes the floor yellow. The strong gold tones in your wood right now = the finish. Did your refinisher apply a coat of FINISH over your colour samples? If they did NOT....then you are picking BLIND. And I mean screaming and crying and tearing your hair because your beautiful gray floors turned to a muddy orange mess. Not good. Do you see the pale colour of the raw wood? You can keep that colour (very close to it) with 3 coats of water based polyurethane like Bona Traffic HD. Keep the gloss level a snick on the low side (satin is a nice low-gloss option) and you keep that pretty 'swedish blonde' look....See MoreStained Hickory
Comments (9)Gray is certainly not dead. Good grief. Many people (me included) absolutely hate brown floors. I have never liked them, so the new shades available now are very welcome and long overdue. Here is one from Uptown Floors - they have a very good reputation. http://www.uptownfloors.com/products-hardwood/casual-elegance/grey-trails.htm Hickory is a tough choice for a gray stain though. It can be done, (mine are gray hickory - prefinished though) but you need to be meticulous about sanding, especially. As suggested above - some nice colors by Duraseal. https://theflooringgirl.com/blog/new-gray-blended-hardwood-stains-duraseal/...See MoreSarah Sangar
