Love your idea to remove porch railing to open it up. Paint the door black.

Cut down a tree, or two?

Do not cut down any of those trees. They make the property. But the awkwardly placed and overpruned shrubs need to be removed and better shrubbery planted.

Super cute house. You may need the railings for code- check first. If you do, paint them black or dark bronze. Look at lots of pictures of brick houses with porches- see what door colors you like and do that. Hang some ferns on the porch, add a couple of chairs, and some pots with colorful flowers at the steps.

and take off the black shutters on those two windows- you don’t need them.

I would remove shutters, keep the railing and look do the following:

1. Cedar shingles on windows on top and gables.
2. Paint the porch area Dreamy white or wind fresh white
3. Paint the door underseas
4. Paint the railing Folkstone
   5 window trim should be the dreamy white or wind fresh white, whichever you do for the porch area.

Some hanging flower baskets over the railing and bright colors and white flowers.

If I remove the shutters, would the windows look too small? I thought of adding one long window box if so...your thoughts?

They windows will not look too small. Window boxes would look nice, but are a traditional touch, so decide paint and railing direction first.

Unless you are diligent and have a green thumb, window boxes can be a PITA. I agree that shutters and large aging shrubs should go and that local building codes may require you to keep the railing. I think Lisa is right except for her #1. The bow windows are already shingled to match the roof, so I see no need to replace all those with cedar ones. Previous owners obviously tried to match gable and dormer paint to the roof color. That color can be changed if you want.

One way to make window boxes low maintenance is not to fill the box with dirt but to put dirt into small pots and planters, root the plants in those and then put those inside the window box. With any window box or planter, frequent water and good drainage is most important.

If i had just bought that house i would simply lighten up the porch woodwork, probably with a light green sage, but maybe some type of white. Then i woud live through at least the entire summer before making landscape and facade changes. The house is perfectly respectable as is, so no need to rush. You’ll know a lot more about how light affects the house and flower beds other things if you watch for awhile and you’ll end up with a better design-if you wait for more info.
