FNM Friday Night Music: Psych Out, Psycho, Illusion, Deception

Lars

This theme is in response to a CD that my brother has called Flipper Psych Out – Original Italian Library Music from the Vaults of Flipper. It contains Italian music used in movies from the 1960s that could be considered psychedelic.

To broaden the theme, I have added illusion and deception, and you can interpret it any way you like. Neo-psychedelic groups have been around since the 1980s and are still with us today.

I'm starting this early so that you will have time to think of responses.

Sandro Brugnolini is one of my favorite Italian musicians.

    Psycho and somewhat psychedelic

From a movie written and directed by someone I met who was living in Venice Beach the same time I was.

If you're going to do Psycho Killer, why not a live version? This from their Rock Hall of Fame induction year. Great band, one of few non-all female bands to have a woman in a substantive role, this being the excellent bass player Tina Weymouth. Her part in this song really makes the song for me.

Spin-off from Jefferson Airplane - Hot Tuna

Another San Francisco band, Big Brother & the Holding Company, with Janis Joplin

    From Seattle & London

I did get to see all of these groups live in concert, from San Antonio to Houston to San Francisco.

Lars I have a bunch of 60s Italian movie music too - it's pretty great 🙂

I've always thought this was pretty trippy:

    And this too:

    And this:

This one's right on the nose, I think:

Love is one of my absolute favorite groups of all time. Huge on the West Coast (and in Scandinavia, of all places) but not nearly as well known as it should have been in other parts of the US because the group's leader (Arthur Lee) was reluctant to travel. Its album Forever Changes usually makes any thoughtful critic's Top 30 of all time and deservedly so. Any of the songs from that album could be on this list. If you're looking for samples, try Andmoreagain, A House Is Not A Motel, Red Telephone, The Daily Planet, Live and Let Live (Oh the sn** has caked against my pants, it has turned into crystal. There's a bluebird sitting on a branch, I guess I'll take my pistol.......), and many others. It's soft/psychedelic acoustic with a little electric rock, not hard rock or metal.

Orange Skies reminds me of Tangerine Dream, partly because of the fruit reference:

A couple more just under the wire...

One of the trippiest songs I know

This is extra trippy in quadraphonic sound 🙂

What a long strange trip it's been...
