Those are most definitely galls! Which are very common on a whole host of tree species and there's really nothing you can - or need to - do about them. While unsightly, they do not harm the tree and the leaf is still able to photosynthesize.

Leaf looks like it could be possibly elm or alder. And both are prone to several different types of leaf galls.

there are like a bazillion weed elms in SE MI ... and those sure look like elm leaves ...

Thank you, Ken. That convinces me it's an elm and the galls look very much like these elm sack (pouch) galls. This tree is on the left of the bridge that goes into the woods at Island Park. There use to be a large figwort growing there but it seems to be gone.

I think Ken was typing a little too fast when he searched for "Serbian" elm, but duckduckgo knew what he meant (Siberian elm). And yes, they come up by the "bazillions" around here.

did you notice the mile after mile of olives blooming around the county ... and i presume up 52 toward chelsea ...... well i call them that.. i dont recall if i ever got a name ...

Yes, speaking of "bazillions", autumn-olive is one of the worst invasives in our area, but that's a good subject for a separate post. Some people like the smell, but I would call it "sickeningly sweet".
