Hoboken, I see that you have solved your problem in a lovely manner with the cafe height plantation shutters with 2.5 slats. This is what I have in my home, and I love them because we can still get the light, yet have full privacy when needed. Yours look great, BTW. I was going to suggest that if you were still wanting something more to “soften” the look of the windows, you could add a fixed fabric covered valance above the windows. You could place the top up at the ceiling height, and have the valance end right at the top of the window trim, thus not sacrificing any light coming in. What you’ve done thus far is just lovely.

Use the same number of panels as the number of windows. Line the stiles up with the mullions. Use an inside mount frame that is typically called a Z frame and do a sill cut on the bottom. This way the frame will sit on the marble sill and the sides and top will overlap the edges giving you a nice finished look. You will see that in this picture also. The tilt rod is made as 2 pieces so that you can open the top and bottom separately. This allows you to open the top for light and leave the bottom closed for privacy. Don't get Hunter Douglas shutters unless you want to over pay. Get that ebook and read it to understand the different types of materials and what is best. If you are somewhat handy you could easily install the shutters for these 2 windows yourself. If you are not handy, say yourself the frustration and have someone else do it. Good luck!

Hey There: "in" is what you like, so if you want plantation shutters go for it. However, I don't think they will work in your place and they will be not very functional. First things first: motorize your blinds for child safety reasons - motorization is very affordable and convenient. Roller shades will work great in your situation as an inside mount. I love plantation shutters but all styles are not created equal. Shutters with a tilt rod for example adds more personality to the shutter but can look heavier than a hidden tilt - personal preference. Also, if you have a large window and you decide you want the double cafe look in an accordion style then that will add a heavier look to your window as will double doors. Before we had our windows done I researched and poured over different looks. We ended up going with a very clean look with hidden tilt, 3 1/2 inch louvre and a single door on 3 windows, double doors on all the rest. We even have them on our slider doors. They let more light in (and the look of the outdoor as well) than the blinds they replaced. And the control of the louvre is wonderful to change up the look. We have open concept and we ended up doing the window above the kitchen sink in a woven wood. All shutters are done in white as is the woven wood. The look is beautiful.
