Window treatment help - Roman shades, plantation shutters...??

We are building a new house and I need to pull trigger on treatments for at least the bedrooms.

We currently have plantation shutters in most rooms in our house plus blackout curtains for sleeping.

I was thinking of going Roman shade route for windows in new house but I’m concerned about real privacy with bedroom windows facing front or neighbors. I’m afraid shutters are too heavy/traditional for new house. Do you think plantation shutters are outdated now?

I'd consider some sort of top-down, bottom-up type of shade. That way you can get light through the top, and privacy at the bottom.

Such a nice space. What are your needs? Are the window treatments strictly decorative? Do you need to protect furniture and rugs from the sun? Do you need privacy? I think you can use different treatments to differentiate rooms but I do think plantation shutters look best when they are used through the whole house. They have a lot of visual weight and I think it helps to make the room look balanced when they are used on all the windows. And since I am OCD, I also like to consider how my window treatments will look when facing the front of the house. I wouldn't worry about curtain panels just yet. You'll be adding rugs, furniture and art which will add different textures to the room. If you decide you'd like panels you can easily add them at a later time.

If you need to be able to cover and uncover the upper level windows during the day, you may need a motorized shade option, or a long pole to keep handy to reach up and open/close plantations shutters. I haven't quite decided what look I'm going for 100% yet but I know I want to use the dining table I have a little sample of in these inspiration boards I have been putting together- it was my grandparents' table. I ordered the chandelier and island lights too. I think I like a bright, pretty, classic, a little coastal/ cottage but not too much, and relatively neutral or light blues. I'll have white shaker cabinets with a marble looking quartz countertop.

I have never liked plantation shutters so I would do drapes on bedroom windows and depending on how much privacy or light and heat control you need in the rest of the house either solar shades or romans . Solar shades are awesome for controlling heat and UV rays and still let you have the view. They are great for daytime privacy but not nightime. I am not a big privacy nut as far as living space is concerned so for me the solar shades are perfect and the drapes in my bedrooms.

Congrats on the new house! That's always an exciting time. Here in the Midwest, Shutters are still a popular option but they are declining in popularity with the addition of different window covering options coming available over the years.

If you are looking for top down bottom up shades, Hunter Douglas offers a variety of different products including roman shades, honeycomb shades, and woven wood shades. They are great for the front side of the house where you need privacy but still want visibility out of the top at certain times.

Hey There: "in" is what you like, so if you want plantation shutters go for it. However, I don't think they will work in your place and they will be not very functional.

First things first: motorize your blinds for child safety reasons - motorization is very affordable and convenient. Roller shades will work great in your situation as an inside mount.

Another option are bottom up top down pleated or honeycomb blinds - we offer them without any strings running across your glass - over 700 fabrics will give you the design and function you need and want...no compromise needed.

thepalmettoporch How do you like your plantation shutters? I'm considering getting one for an unreachable window in the entryway. We need privacy, because it faces an upstairs bath. The neighbor's window looks right in. Not that they're looking, but it's uncomfortable! I'm considering top and bottom shutters (double-hung window). Would leave the top shutter slats open, and the bottom closed permanently. Wondering if it'll make the foyer & hall dark. Would love your opinion.
