Congrats on the first "outside" bloom. Boy, that is one large load of daylilies and they look terrific. No wonder you did good at your sale. When I was a member of a AHS club in NY, we did something similar with the pics posted above the fans at the plant sale. A lot of work getting the fans cleaned, washed and labeled. Kudos to you and your hubby for doing all that work.

I agree those plants look fabulous! And how nice to take the time to post the pictures above them. I was with my daughter at a farmer's market in Nashville last year and some vendor was trying to tell a customer about how pretty Bela Lugosi is and why they should buy it. I was looking at something else in her booth and overheard the conversation and found a picture of it on my phone and showed them. Sale!! I should have gotten a commission!! But for someone who does not know, a picture truly is a bonus.

Don't you just love the color of the dianthus this time of year? It is so cheerful, blooms so early and continues to bloom for a long time. What more could you ask???

I love planting it between the small daylilies. When I started planting it, it didn't know it would come back the next year. The fragrance is wonderful too.

When Bob and I started selling at the herb fair, we wondered if we could be successful selling from pictures. We put the stats on each picture too.

Those are some great looking fans, Nancy! I am glad the sale went well, I can understand why. I used to have a lot of dianthus, it did seem to die out after a while. I found that the biennial dianthus lasted more than just the 2 years, but the perennial only lasted about 3 years, and my favorites not even that. Still, I enjoy it so much, I really need to get more

Shipping has been a bit of the nightmare this spring with all of the frost warnings we have had. I just didn't want to ship any damaged plants. It's predicted to get down to 36 here tonight, but where we are, it's always a couple degrees colder. I am ready for some consistently warm weather.

On the positive side, we have shipped by USPS and have not had any trouble. Lots of people on facebook talked about switching to UPS or FedEx because of all the problems with USPS last season.

I hope that good fortune continues with your shipping. I had a box of daylilies “lost” for 10 days this spring! They did not look well upon arrival but probably will make it. The vendor told me he had 3 boxes including mine significantly delayed. Last year I had one almost 3 weeks arriving and had hoped for better things this year! Maybe your luck will hold out!!

The current gas crisis in certain states might affect USPS and others with delivery too. I hope they get that solved.........Nice sized daylilies for sale Nan......TA DA! on your first daylily of the season. I just got through refreshing all my potted daylilies (the ones I had left) and it looks like Wild Cherry Wine may be my first. That's highly unusual. Today was cool and wet. Not fit for man nor gardener outside..............Maryl

The Dianthus are so pretty. I have 2 but they are pathetic. They shrink yearly, and this year there is virtually nothing.

Those pictures of the daylilies are a great idea. I bought one once at a farmer's mkt without pictures and I regretted it.

I don’t mean to threadjack, @hoosier_nan (IN z5b/6a), but I see you’re pretty close to my zone (5b, Des Moines area.) When do daylilies usually get scapes/buds in this zone? I bought my first 2 daylilies last year (Indian Giver & Bridgeton Invention) for a tricky spot (bright shade during most of day, but then hot sun for the last 3ish hours of the day.) My hostas fried and someone suggested daylily.

Anyway, I bought them with scapes full of buds in mid-June last year and they bloomed beautifully. But I don’t have a single scape this year. Is it too early?

It’s been raining daily for about 3 weeks now, and we somehow just went from 90 F to 37 F lows this week. I’m just trying to figure out if it’s still too early or if its something I need to fix.

Not that Nancy, but awake and chatty . I believe both of those are early mid bloomers. The one Nancy pictured above is an extra early bloomer, other blooms she has i think are potted in her greenhouse. You should be seeing scapes before too long, but I think too early for you. I have just started seeing scapes on my early mid bloomers this week in my warmer

Nancy is correct. We have about 5000 in the ground and none of them except for early species daylilies have bloomed. Some of the daylilies have scapes but actually flowering is probably about 2 weeks away. The ones that have scapes are the extra early varieties like Stoke the Fire, Lava Flow and Buddy's Betsy. They bloom early June for us usually. Most of our daylilies don't have scapes yet. We grow a few tender ones in a warm greenhouse all winter. As soon as the temperatures begin to heat up in the greenhouse (it can get to over 100 if the fans aren't on), they start putting out scapes.

The great thing about growing daylilies with different bloom seasons is you usually have something in flower. We grow a bunch of late daylilies and I won't bother looking for scapes on them for a long time. They usually start blooming late June to August.
