Excuse me for a dumb question,

I live in South Texas, I have a couple of hostas not doing greT, but I went to my church plant swap and picked up what I thought was hostas but bloom spike is weird, thinking might not be hosta, but other than blooms it looks to me like a hosta. What have I got? TIA

If you could take a photo it would get you a positive ID.

Thanks everyone for the comments! The pot is a 15" diameter, what should it be? And I have been hand pollenating my zucchinis since the beginning as I am not sure if the bees are doing it. The one in the picture never had a flower that opened, it just turned brown and fell off.

Exactly, and this situation has not just been going on X number of years, but for quite awhile. You can't slap it on any particular administration, but has been an accumulation of several, each seemingly afraid to take the steps needed to rectify and stabilise the previous. When we were riding the bubbles, it made for wonderful press, no? But they weren't solid foundations. This was bound to happen, and it finally did. I have had a small business for nineteen years now, and it's a ruthless and risky way to make a living. No administration......right down to the grass roots ones have been kind to them, or insisted on a level playing field in this country. The thing is, they're the entities who had the employment in the great depression when the big boys crumbled and kept employment and wages more diversified. It's called not putting all your eggs into one basket. Just last week, I received a credit application from one of my major suppliers. I filled one out twenty years ago, and survived the two year failure rate most small businesses die from. I've done business with them from the day I got my business license twenty years ago. What? I am LOL. I know why all their customers got that letter. They're obviously reconsidering their risks. I don't need their credit line, and I'm not even sending it back. I'm quite willing to deal on a cash basis. I have a sneaky suspicion they'll sell to me anyway. What really irrates me is I remember back in the mid-eighties the push by the government for people to set up their own retirement accounts. Yes, that's a wise decision. But, how does the average person do that? Why by investments.......... So not only does the investment market affect us in so many ways, it is the financial security of the baby boomers. Hah.

you can do anything from spreading a layer of compost/manure over the beds (called 'top dressing') to lifting your perennials, and rototilling (or forking, if you're in to the old-school, back-breaking ways) the same 'organic matter' into the bed, then resetting the plants, watering, and mulching the whole shebang. in most cases, it depends on the quality of the soil you started with, and whether the perennials you have are brats (things like roses and other heavy feeders) or not.

Pam, If you're using the polycarb ridge cap with the same kind of corrugations as the panels, you need to screw it down like the sheets. Or, you can just buy lengths of galvanized steel ridge and screw it to the corrugations and use filler strips to plug the spaces in between. I've used a vented ridge cap on some applications too. It allows hot air to escape through non-leaking vents in the pieces. Easy way to crawl on the structure is to cut a piece of 3/8" OSB to just short of where the ridge edge will go. Build a "stop" out of 2X that'll screw onto the top plate or exposed wall studs to hold the OSB. Screw that to the OSB. Ladder up to the platform and lay the pre-drilled cap in place. Come down and move the structure down the wall 4'. Don't forget to orient the seams away from the prevailing wind. Seal them with some silicone. Depending on the pitch of the roof, you may have to put some thin battens on the OSB sheet to keep from slipping off, or losing a drill...

Looks like plantain weed to me. Hostas are also known as plantain lilies because of their similarity to this weed.

And tell your church to make sure church members bring true hostas to the exchange in the future so others don’t get weeds!! ;-)

Just for fun, I looked up the "weed" and found that people actually sell it online. It's supposed to have beneficial uses and is supposed to treat various conditions. As for me, I will continue to dig it out and dispose of it quickly before it sets seeds and disperses them all over my yard.

If you don’t have it growing wild. You can keep it for medicinal purpose.

it’s good for sunburn bug bites etc.. Anti-inflammatory properties soothes stomach issues. I make a tea with peppermint oil Along with green tea for flavor. It’s mild and it helps

i keep a section unmowed so it as allowed to grow. In mass it doesn’t look bad

of course in the city peer pressure rules on how lawns have to look. So a pot is good alternative.

since it covers about half of my 5 acres ... i dont know why anyone would plant it ...

when the kids were younger.. and barefoot all summer ... they had these burn like sores better their toes .. from running thru the flower stalks .. took me a while to figure that out ...

so im out the in july and august mowing a completely browned out lawn [questionable term there] .. kicking up a dust storm.. just to cut the stalks off this nightmare plant ..

the upside is.. they are the only thing green that time of year.. so it looked like i had a lawn ..

people will pay money for anything.. i swear .. lol ..

i bought one once at a plant auction.. is was variegated.. lol .. it was a donation to a cause.. so we all got a laugh out of buy a variegated weed ... so.. if you cost was to the church.. thats ok with me ... but if it was to the benefit of the seller.. well ... that peep might never be my garden friend ...

as to the hosta reference above .. that was an idiot rogue name for hosta .. only surpassed by calling it a lily ... as much as i loathe the nomenclature peeps for changing the names of my favorite plants ... in this case.. i understand why it need be done at times ...

Plantain (NOT plantain lily) is also edible. It can be boiled, baked, used in salads, and so on.

And yes, I have been wanting to grow the variegated version myself. :-)
