Interesting how some languages developed their own form, like Cyrillic or those of Asian countries. DH and I found out while traveling that unusual (to us) languages make navigating around countries much more difficult.

Remember that the written alphabet used in English and Western European languages is called the Latin alphabet and derives from ancient Rome. It's not surprising that languages used far to the East, mostly Slavic ones and also including those in some western regions like Serbia too, would have had other influences.

The alphabet used in Bulgaria is slightly different from that used in Russian. When I first graduated from university, I got a job in Austin (where I moved to after graduation) at the Main Library at UT, and my job was to catalog a Slavic literature collection. I got the job because I knew Russian, and I did not have any trouble understanding the title pages of Russian books, but the collection also contained a handful of Bulgarian books, and I had to use a special key to transliterate the Bulgarian titles, author names, etc. in order to catalog these books. I sincerely doubt that anyone at UT ever checked these books out.

The Bulgarian alphabet is also called Glagolitic.
