Cyrillic alphabet

The Cyrillic alphabet used chiefly in Russia and Bulgaria originated as an offshoot of Greek and its earliest origins came to be dated to a couple of centuries before the birth of Christ. It didn’t get its present name until after A.D. 800 when St. Cyril, a missionary to the Moravians, is credited with putting into pretty much the form known today. Why this alphabet is used only in Russia and Bulgaria is beyond me.
