"Starphire" or "Ultra Clear" glass are trade names for what is actually low iron glass. The iron content is what gives glass the green tint, the level of which varies depending on the exact composition of the original product. The cost varies significantly based on whether it is a brand name product (Starphire vs. generic low iron), where the product comes from and who is fabricating it. We install a lot of glass showers; perhaps 5% of them are completed in low iron glass. We don't generally recommend it unless you have very light or white coloured tile. It's quite difficult to tell the difference with darker tile and therefore in our opinion not worth the investment. Showerguard is completely different; another brand name for glass that has been factory sealed to repel water. There are various other similar products using a couple of different technologies (factory applied or polymer-type products applied after installation). Most of these still require regular reapplication, and since they can interfere with silicone's adherence, we usually recommend they be applied after installation.

He is incorrect. PPG Showerguard is called "Ultra White" which is the crystal clear Showerguard for Low Iron or Starphire Glass. He may be referring to an aftermarket product as he may have already ordered the glass and does not want to eat it but he is 100% wrong on his statement.

I ended up getting the Starphire but couldn't get the showerguard. One local company said they "used" to order it but since you can't see it on the glass, they had all sorts of trouble with it being on the wrong side or them installing it backwards? My doors were just installed yesterday and I love the low iron glass! Now I am trying to get one of the glass coatings done-diamonfusion. I think it runs about $150 so it wouldn't have been much more to get the showerguard if it was possible. I guess it all depends on where you live. We could have ordered from about 2 hours away but we were worried that if we had a problem, it would be tough to get them back out!

Creative Tile, I also have heard good things.....my plan has totally changed, you can search my name and find my design thread. I'm now doing a 48" neo angle. I want to go USG because they make the custom pan with the drain where I want it, and trimming these pans will obviously create some strange aesthetics at change of plane w/ wall. Problem is, no one wants to sell me one! Here in NJ, only distributor within 90 minutes are HD stores. I call them, and they don't know the custom pan exists. Local tile guy has Wedi, but very pricey, and it doesn't seem ideal for a neoangle curb, also no custom pan. I'm assuming you may have a connection with someone who will sell me one? Online USG email support for neo angle sent me back to uninformed home depot, and a general instruction which doesn't address how to wrap the 135 deg. angle. I'm going to call them one last time, if not I'll take my chances with kerdi membrane with a mud deck. 1 question on the USG product...if i go with the new ultralight foam, does it require full membrane, or just the seams? If it requires full membrane, should I just use fiberrock as it will probably be much cheaper? Any ideas how to do the 135 neoangle curb, I'm probably just going to borrow kerdi methods over at johnbridge, and use the sealant for any questionable corners . Thanks so much for your help!
