Backyard landscape help
Comments (6)Personally, I would rather have your weedy, mossy grass than a sea of bare mulch which I think would look dreadful. Have you tried overseeding with a grass specifically for shade? Grass will be the easiest and most cost effective plan for the area. Would you use a paved area if the lower porch was extended out into a patio? If you do go for the mulch idea, I would use a heavy layer of mulch with no landscape fabric under it (it will make it more difficult to maintain) and plant a groundcover that will spread densely. You will need to leave paths out from the covered porch in logical, useful places. You will still need to weed the area thoroughly a few times a year. Do you have patio block edging your other beds? You should continue the style of edging that is used elsewhere. It looks like your shrub beds have straight edges with no patio block, so continue with that. Curves placed just for the sake of having curves don't enhance any landscape. I don't know your budget, but rather than rush to a solution that will look silly or unkempt, I would make a decision on what best meets your needs and then save up for it. Grass seed is fairly inexpensive, so overseeding with shade tolerant grass suited to your climate and soil will make it more palatable to you aesthetically in the mean time....See MoreBackyard patio/ landscaping help needed!
Comments (9)What people can get here mostly is suggestions and inspiration. You are providing "inspiration" pictures so have some idea of what you want. It's a matter of organizing it on a 2-D plan. Your choices there are that, either you do it ... or you hire a professional landscape designer to do it. If you do it, you can get counsel here and the first bit you already got was to provide a plan view sketch of the area. (One would have a very hard time trying to convey the information you seek, back to you on the pictures provided so far.) Many people get inspiration for planting via pictures (that are taken square to the building and show the flanking surroundings in slightly overlapping pictures.) But it is too early to bother with planting, since you need hardscape and it must be resolved first, before you start working on a planting layout....See Moreneed backyard landscape design help, half court basketball install
Comments (2)So the basketball court will be at the end of the yard and new planting beds to the left of the pic above next to the house. I envision the tree will be to the right in the pic above. Just can’t visualize how the path will go front yard to gate....See MoreNeed Help with Design / Landscaping Ideas for near 1.5 acre backyard!
Comments (8)Ideas/considerations for when you talk with a real landscape architect: - how much gardening and of what kind are you/your wife wanting to do? Flowers, veggies, easy-care shrubbery? - how much lawn do you want to manicure and mow every week (personally I'd minimize the lawn, maximize your lovely woodland and natural meadow space). - if you can get electric to the hangar, do it. - cohesive yard: maybe a three-rail wood fence (backed with wire to contain pets) around the whole perimeter. If you do a fence, remember to include gates at strategic places wide enough for mowers, carts, etc. - any DIY skills or inclination? - dogs: You look like you're out in the country a bit, and big barky dogs are not a bad thing to have near the house. I like having a doggie door to give dogs access any time they want to their own dog run (an area maybe 6' wide by 15' long, fenced with 5 or 6' tall chain link). That way they can go in and out by themselves, and be contained in an area that you know is safe and escape-proof (deer, rabbits, and squirrels are such fun to chase). A normal fence can surround any other area you want them to play in while you're able to keep a closer eye on them. Not sure any of this was of help, but good luck anyhow....See MoreBrian
