Growing Fruit Trees in Smart Pots
Comments (10)I'm not exactly sure why these Smart Pots appeal to me, but I am a rookie just getting started, and have a twist on the questions posed above. I have a fully hardscaped front yard, 3-4" of pea gravel over landscape fabric over the native soil that used to be a grass lawn. I am looking to grow fruit trees in Smart Pots, placed on top of the gravel, and utilizing a drip irrigation system as much as possible. I will basically be following Dave Wilson Nursery's suggestions for Southern California for low chill varieties of peach, nectarine, plum, pluot, citrus, almond plus some blueberries, pomegranates, and passionfruit. If I buy 2-3 year bareroot dwarf trees, and have 20 and 30 gallon Smart Pots, what is the best growing medium to start with, Al's 5-1-1 or Gritty or something peaty? Also, would it be best to leave the Smart Pots on top of the gravel, or to dig the gravel away and have the pots directly on the landscape fabric, or even go as far as to cut thru the fabric and place the pots directly on the soil? Once I get the growing medium sorted, I will have more questions on watering and fertilizing, but I am trying to read more topics about those first....See MoreSmart Pots
Comments (1)I have been looking into these, but since they are made of non renewable fabric material I do not see them as something an organic gardener would buy. If a plant I purchased came potted in one I would probably see about reusing it, but like plastic pots I would not buy one....See Morere-using Smart Pots and Roottrappers
Comments (34)I got some first-hand evidence of how the Smart Pots seem to work. I had transplanted a Quercus michauxii seedling around April 1 into a Smart Pot. It was bitten off by a critter this weekend, so I decided (since I have more michauxii seedlings than I need anyway) to just sacrifice it, and dump and check out the root system. There was one long, slightly "thick" root going down at an angle off the air-pruned tip of the taproot that had reached the bottom and worked its way into the fibers. The root had not emerged from the outside of the pot, but instead seems to have gotten "stuck" there. No side roots had branched off of this particular root yet, but I imagine that the Smart Pot works both by airpruning AND 'trapping' of the root tip....See MoreSmart Pot Split?
Comments (4)Molly, Sounds great! Thanks for being the first to respond. I've actually grown potatoes using a number of above-ground methods, but these Smart Pots sound like the best of all worlds. Any idea how many of each you'd like? I'm needing (6) of the 30 gallon and (12) of the 15 gallon. What I'll do is once I have a few folks who are interested, I'll purchase the two lots of 25 of each size and then let everyone know exactly what they owe prior to shipping. If you live near Portland, I'm sure we can just figure a way to meet up. Thanks again for the interest and I'll keep in touch to let you know when we have enough folks to make this happen....See Morealexcm [z6a]
