Comments (6)I think you could try cuttings - take pencil diameter or larger branches, cut pieces about 8 or 10 inches long, remove leaves from lower part of cutting, allow a few leaves on the upper end to remain, push half of cutting into damp potting soil or sand, keep moist and shady for a month or two. A percentage will root, so start with more cuttings than you want shrubs. I have never tried this with Elderberry. Another option is to look for a shoot near the base of the shrub for a small piece that can be divided from the main plant with a few roots. A large shrub like the one in your photo should have a few side shoots, I think. Dig the shoot with a little soil and some roots and transplant to create a new shrub. I have to admit I have never tried to divide elderberry so I am not sure if they grow divideable shoots. They tend to volunteer in my garden so I always have some if I want them. Good Luck....See MoreCan you ID this lacecap hydrangea?
Comments (2)It is virtually impossible to accurately ID a specific cultivar without a DNA analysis (many are far too similar in appearance) but we can come close :-)) Given your location and the fact that it has bloomed reliably for you in your colder climate, I'd guess it is a serrata cultivar and Lanarth White is a reasonable guess. I would have said Twist and Shout as it seems to be very cold hardy but that wasn't introduced to the commercial market until 2008. btw, coloring of the sterile florets (the large petaled flowers) can be extremely variable for most serratas, ranging from a very pale pink or blue (nearly white) to more intensely colored as well as pure white. The fertile flowers colors can also be somewhat variable/dependent on soil pH....See MoreHydrangea ID please...
Comments (5)I prefer to move them when they are dormant but you can also move in the Fall, when the temperatures have started to come down. It needs some mulch there so add some in its new location. The soil there looks dry too. The blooms are too small to see clearly. It appears to have some flower buds opening in some branches too; not sure. Paniculatas and mopheads are the only ones I would consider for now. If the blooms are panicle shaped, it may be a paniculata. Otherwise, a mophead or serrata....See MoreHydrangea ID Please? (Pics)
