Can Anyone ID This Animal?

Does anyone know what kind of animal this is? It has made a large hole in the ground outside my Pilates studio in Austin. I’ve never seen anything like it here. Thanks.

I can't tell if Central Texas is part of the name or if that's just the photographer i.d. for the location of the photo.

Thanks all for the Replies. I forgot to mention that this is my first year gardening, so I'm a bit on the beginner side. My first gardening area just turned out too small, then the second area wasn't enough. So I made a third, fourth and a fifth. I have crops all over the place (they do look great). That is why the fence idea was ruled out, just too much ground to cover. The other day, I caught him going into my shed. I closed the door on him and tried to figure out how I was going to remove him without having to kill it. Well, next thing I know, he somehow pushed the shed doors open (it was latched) and escaped. I have a burrow in my yard, I believe that the shed and my yard is their vacation home. Their place of residence is my neighbors yard. I could always lay stone all the way around my yard, but I would need a lot. (its at least close to 1000 feet of fence. I'm going to get a trap and trasfer them to a much nicer place far away from my garden.

Thanks for your answers. It didn't occur to me that there may not even be any dogs! Now I'm thinking I should contact the attorney generals of both states before March 25 because its possible they will close up shop if they aren't going to deliver on that date as promised. Its funny that we have a bit of a shortage of dogs here in NE. There are some lab and shepard mixes at the shelters, but I just don't want a big dog. I don't know tho, maybe I can get dh to move up to medium sized. We are more likely to find a local one then. The want ad is a good idea. I'll ask on Freecycle too. Kathy

We have them here and I’ve always assumed they were just a normal squirrel with black fur.

We have lots of those around our lake house on Lake Travis, distinguishable by the dark coat that extends over the shoulders. They are also beefier than regular squirrels and they dig some amazing holes! I don't know the name of them though.

I cannot see the photo, but I do know that armadillos will burrow large holes, often near building structures, rocks, tree stumps, etc.

That is weird - the photo was there when I replied earlier and now it's MIA.

FWIW, I learned there are 2 types of squirrels - tree and ground. Chipmunks and prairie dogs are ground squirrels, for example.

Ha! It’s not showing for me, either.

Kinda O/T, but I look at the insects ID board sometimes, and there will be threads like this —

“Hi, can someone tell me what this bug is? It was in my [room]”!

Always cracks me up. I just want to make up a name, “Oh, no. What you have there is the Bitimus stingbug. Not good. Can you call someone to come get you? Immediately.”

I think this is it.

If you go along the top of the heading (before clicking onto the thread) you'll see 3horizontal lines and beside it 2horizontal lines. Click on the 2horizonatl lines and you should see it on the actual listing of the thread.
