Does anyone have any daffodils still blooming?
Comments (16)Not familiar with that variety, kentstar. On Daffseek, it just identifies them as extra late, as you already knew. I hope you will let us know if they do bloom this year. Do you see any fl*ower buds? That is a very long bloom period, Chills. Did you plan it that way? Hi Michelle, :-) I was thinking that a white would be what I would enjoy with the phlox, and 'Thalia' is one that I've always liked. I would love to see a photo if you have one. Your g*arden always looks gorgeous! I've added that to my list. Thanks! jlc, added poets daffodils to my list, thanks. It's mostly white will go well. Dee, it's hard to go by this year with any of the bloom times, I think. I just deadheaded the last of my daffs this past weekend and my phlox is still going. The hot pink seems to be looking fresher than the pastel purple and white. Interesting that you saw dwarf purple Iris blooming with phlox. I have some of that blooming in my g*arden right now! lol I do see a 'Purple Knight' on google and it mentions it is heat tolerant, which is a plus. I have 'Navy Gem' that I bought at NEWFS. I could move them over to the phlox. Nice idea. Thanks for thinking of me. I thought of you over the weekend, when I turned over my cover crop. Comments (9)This iris is SPIN-OFF. I introduced it in 1987. If you go to GOOGLE, then MORE and choose Google Images and type in [spin-off + iris] you can see several images of it. My last iris introduction was THAT'S ALL FOLKS in 2005. We are devoted entirely to daylilies now. You can see my daylily efforts by clicking on "coming attractions" on daylilygarden.net. Enjoy! Comments (24)They don't make it up here. Makes me sad because I do like them. Sometimes some come back for a couple years but less and less and even less blooms and then nothing. If I planted 100 I can expect to see 50 live through the winter and wet spring. Only half of those 50 bloom and the following year it's halfed again the same way. I was kind of hoping Walmart was going to get some in as spring bulbs this year but they didn't. Last year they had a big bag for next to nothing but I passed because I was too busy. The notheast I think is just too cold and wet for them. I kind of see a bit of a pattern here. TX is dry compared to the east, so is most of CA. MS is a wet state, same for NJ and NH. MS is certainly mild enough but lots of rain. Anybody have luck in the northern plains states or provinces? They are treated as annuals here. Cheap enough so you don't bother digging and storing them. I really don't remember but I think walmart's cheap bag was 250 of them for $3.88. My husband bought some for the gardens at the state prison and kind of got mad at me when I told him they wouldn't make it. Couldn't understand why walmart would sell something that wouldn't survive. Actually Walmart's plant dept is full of perennials and shrubs that won't make a harsh winter up here....See MoreDoes hardiness vary from iris to iris?
Comments (15)If you really like an iris that dies out the first year, I'd suggest trying it again and plant it in a different location. I've tried Batik for 5 years (you'd think I'd give up, hu?) and every year it winter/spring rots on me. However, last year I got 2 healthy rhyzomes from a gal in a trade and low and behold one of them took off and is actually blooming and looking great this year! The other rhyzome looks fine but without all the increases and no blooms. I've also had iris that were planted with all the others (that grow great) and they didn't do much (bloomed close to the ground, not many increases, etc). One of them was Covet Me. Last year I'd had enough babying this one and gave them all away except one that I threw in the ground on the west side of our secret fence. It started increasing like madd and this year has nice tall stalks with lots of blooms. So for me, I've learned that sometimes persistence pays off if you're willing to try new sources and plant in different places. heidi...See MoreMegan McGowan (USDA Zone 8A)
