Remodeling Bathrooms Design Dilemma

Grey/white kitchen and beige/tan bathroom?

I have a one story house that we’re remodeling. Can I have a grey/white kitchen and a beige/cream/light tan bathroom? If so, what do I do with the floor? We live in Florida so plan on tiling the whole house. Pick a tile that’s light and has both greys and beiges in it? Or change the tile at the entrance of the bedrooms and bathrooms - that seems like it would look funny?

I would suggest that you look at a range of taupe colors, ones that can bridge grays and beige.

If you go to model homes in many areas of Florida you will see this taupe color scheme as people move away from the gray trend and don't want to go back to the beige trend of the 90's. Taupe warms the gray up, but doesn't go into the pink-beige territory that no one wants to go back to!

Go to a good local tile store (not Floor & decor) and ask that they help you pull a selection of tiles with a range of colors and patterns built around taupe.

Look at these mood/material boards to get some ideas:

At work, in our newly designed building, the committee picked dark grey and light grey. We have steel cabinets and the panels are a lighter grey. I found that I liked the pale icy blue with dark green against those two. Silver looks really great with it all. My boss, on the other hand, loves warm colors. His office has deep blue velvet couch and chairs. His Persian rug is a deep burgundy with touches of lighter green and a tanish orange. He has light oak furniture and it all pulls together well. I decided that grey makes a great "back drop" and whichever palate you use shines well. I'd have the pale blue, nickel and a "stronger color" (in this case grey is the neutral) to stand up against it all. Or the tan, mint green plus the "stronger color". Otherwise, it's all too matched and doesn't have the same punch. Just what's worked for us here.

What is the overall look you're going for in the bathroom? Also, what is your plan for the vanity? Personally, I love to let the tile stand out and keep a minimal palette. So I might look for a white paint that nearly matches the white in the marble tile. This would let the veining in the marble and the aqua accents stand out. (I am also biased towards white in the bathroom. I love the clean, minimal, fresh feel.) Alternatively, I would look for a pale aqua lighter than your accent tile. That will still allow your tile to stand out, but would bring in more color to the room. Again it keeps the palette fairly minimal. I think a pale aqua would look really lovely in the room. If you want to add more color, you could do a pale yellow. Or if you want to make the room moody and bold, you could do black or dark charcoal.

Artemis - surprisingly, I haven't had any issues keeping these towels white and I've had them for about 3-4 years. A bright pink item actually snuck into my last load of white towels (which streaked everything pink!) and just one wash with Oxy whitener made them bright white again. They're Charisma towels from Costco so not a great expense to replace if needed. Sheeisback - thanks! I agree about the ivory. The yellow seems okay in person but not quite right in the pictures.

Thank you guys. I really appreciate your help. My brain is fried and this decision has to be made immediately. gthigpen....I freaked out when I realized that the white was going to be a mistake. I cancelled it just in time but they are waiting on me to call in the color so it can be ordered. Sad for you that you didn't catch it...I hate regrets. My dd did the same thing with penny tile and white grout. A sea of white. Ugh. It's still pretty but she hates it. Gthigpen and Jackie...I see that you are using several colors of grout. I don't have that in me and I don't have a designer to advise me. I wish I did. Do you think it will be ok to choose one grout color i.e.; Silverado...and use it on all of the tile in three different bathrooms for simplicity's sake??? I have subway in two showers and in one tub surround. And the black and white on three floors and two shower floors. Here are some pics. Please advise and thank you so much for any wise words.

you'd do a diff tile on the bathroom that works with beige. use the other tile throughout the house if you're doing the grays.

it's perfectly fine to change the flooring in bathrooms and bedrooms.

Thanks. I guess I would change the tile at either the bedroom door or the start of the master bath? We actually don’t have a door on the master bath- it’s kind of an extension of the room, so would it be better to change the title at the bedroom door or is the start of the bathroom still ok? Isn’t there a desire to have a consistent flooring or color theme throughout the house though If we were to sell?
