low maintenance landscape ideas for this back yard
Comments (2)Lawns really require minimal maintenance as compared to other types of planted landscapes.........about the only thing that requires less attention is paving/hardscaping or a few types of groundcovers :-) Knowing exactly where you are located (is that salt water or fresh water you border on?) and what you mean by "low maintenance" would help to clarify some better suggestions. I could contemplate getting rid of the lawn in the middle tier and possibly the top but lawn on the bottom would seem to offer the most welcome "footing" for an area that obviously gets frequent and diverse use....See Morebackyard landscape ideas
Comments (36)Be aware that Doug lives in the SE US, which doesn’t have nearly the water issues of southern CA, so adjust expectations accordingly. There will be Mediterranean plants and as GG48 mentioned California natives that will work well. I would spend time looking at lots of pictures of southern CA gardens to get an idea of plant density and plant palette that is used in your area. Here is a Houzz article I found that includes several low water CA gardens. One set of steps up and then paths across the hillside periodically is necessary since a lot of foot traffic on an unvegetated slope will lead to erosion. Start a file of photos of gardens and plants you find appealing, even if they aren’t planted on a slope. You can save ideas in a folder here on Houzz of photos found in the Houzz photos tab, but you can also upload photos from other sources. Regardless of whether this ends up being DIY or designed by a pro, having ideas of what you find appealing will help. As functionthelook mentioned upthread, you want to be aware of leaves, flowers, and other material that is likely to be shed by plants near the pool as anything that drops in needs to be removed. You may be able to find a list of pool-friendly (low litter) plants for your area somewhere on Houzz or elsewhere on line that you can use for the area near the pool. You say there is irrigation on the slope. Be aware that it may need modification to work well for the plants and the design you choose, and make sure that you know exactly where lines run before the shovel comes into use....See Moreideas re landscaping hill/retaining wall and backyard
Comments (1)In order to have pavers and walk that made sense, one would need to know destinations within the yard and the uses needed by the occupants. We know neither. For the sloping border, decide which is needed: screening, or screening and shade. Plant a row of small trees or large shrubs that extend above the fence to provide screening and/or shade. The plants can touch, as in a hedge, or they can be spaced out depending on the degree of screening desired. Grow groundcover below the trees/shrubs. Could add an accent plant here or there. The turf needs to be reestablished for appearance and as a functional space for activities & pedestrian circulation....See MoreDeck/Landscape Ideas for a hilly, forested backyard?
Comments (5)I totally agree unless you have the skills to do this you need a pro. I love multi level decks I find them much more useable space that grass or patios . I have deck all around my house that is butlt on a steep slope we still have an area that is awkward to get to to do nay real landscaping but we planted some stuff that hopefully over the next 2 years will fill in nicely , We divided our deck into spaces like a home so we have a pool with deck al around then an outdoor kitchen and dining space and then a really large area for casula seating that can sit 16 in a pinch ....See Morezoey512
