Comments (3)Haahahahaa! Karen this is SO funny. I'm bursting into laughter reading these posts again, and remembering writing and reading them at the time. Well done! And my favourite part about Martha Stewart dropping in with her dish towel parachute!!! WAY too funny!...See MoreWhy would a 2 story great room have returns at the top?
Comments (2)To have an internal circulation duct with a powered fan to take that hot air and put it back down at floor level. It's the only way to even out the temperature....See MoreCold draft in rooms because of cold air return vents
Comments (4)It would appear that somehow your fireplace insert is tied in with you regular heating system. You will have to go do a little crawling around and tracing of the duct work and block it off where it needs to be. You have to be careful though to make sure it doesn't affect the rest of your system. If you're not comfortable doing it or not sure you're probably better off hiring someone who will understand what they're looking at in your house. It's pretty difficult to see into your basement from here....See MoreCold Air return in great room
Comments (10)The plans are pretty hard to read. My first thought is why the heck would you have duct work up high in a basement house that is mostly a ranch? But I can't really tell what I am seeing... Either way, you can't just move these things around very easily. While you probably should have your ductwork between the first floor and basement, that isn't going to change now. The return looks fairly small also but maybe this is just for a/c? Most returns in this situation are horizontal because there isn't a vertical plane for ducts over head. Neither is great but you need to walk around and see if there is a ceiling area where you wouldn't mind the return that is in the open area. Since much of your area is vaulted, there probably isn't a better choice. Avoid being near cooking also. I doubt in Ohio an engineer is needed to place the return (and probably not even to size it)....See Morecalidesign
