Tale of two cherries

Tree #1

Tree #2

Higan cherry is really variable in habit, flower character, even the time of year it blooms. In the id-Atlantic where I live the early blooming weeping form is one of our most popular flowering trees.

Tree #1 on it's own stem, may be a seedling for all I know. Otherwize untouched by human hands.

Tree #2 high graft which produces an umbrella effect, heavily pruned and manipulated.

Anyone who knows me understands that I prefer tree #1. Here's what I need to understand, why do I need to see 50 #2 umbrellas for every #1 form? What exactually explains the infatuation with the umbrella? They are heavily manipulated like a shrub and forced into tight spaces, is that it?
