What's with these two Fairy Tale roses?
Comments (17)Susan, whack the rogue canes back to 3". You can let them bloom first or not. Then the cane makes 2 or 3 laterals; cut these back to 2 or 3 leaves each and you get more branches. Etc. Or, if the canes are flexible and 4-7' long, bend the cane in a hoop and tie it to its own base ("self-pegging"). It will make 3 or 4 laterals at the top of the arch. You can cut off the outer/downward section later if you want. Or, something that works with some varieties not others is to pinch out the growth tips of strong basals when they are about 14" long. Be sure you get the fleshy growth tip, not just leaves. Some roses will branch in response, others will make just one shoot and keep going up. Most shrub roses have an awkward adolescence. You have to be patient and work with them for a few years, just as you know your daughter won't be 13 forever....See MoreA tale of two Christmases
Comments (15)Brenda, the "Knucklehead" wine is a white zinfandel. How is it? I wouldn't know, I still haven't learned to like wine, LOL, but his son said it was pretty good. I haven't yet tasted it. Elery says I have my own "wine grading scale" with 1 being worst and 5 being best: 1. Gag, gasp, choke. 2. I wish I hadn't swallowed that but it was too icky to spit out. 3. That sucks. 4. That doesn't COMPLETELY suck. 5. Um.....it's OK. And so, you see, you'll have to take someone else's word for it. I'm still trying to get the taste of the Christmas merlot out of my mouth. My mother assured me it was "very good". I wanted to scrub my tongue with Lysol..... Annie...See MoreA tale of two peaches
Comments (4)Well, it bit the dust in short order. I dug it up and found the roots and lower trunk almost entirely consumed by what looks like grubs. I find this shocking. I have never seen grubs attack a woody plant like this. The hostas did not seem bothered by the grubs at all. Thoughts? Cheers, Werner...See MoreA tale of two contractors: help me choose!
Comments (12)Thanks all! It is such a tough decision and your input is really really helpful. Just to clarify, there was a $150k differential between the highest and lowest bids, but two of the four came in at about the same, $60k higher than the lowest bid. The low bid worries me (which seems crazy, because the low bid is double what we went into this thinking we'd spend!) Both contractors have been around a long time. Not sure which one is larger. I came here sort of implicitly favoring our old contractor. There's something really tempting about knowing what you're getting into - the bad as well as the good! - when you're doing something so far outside your own expertise. And really, after a few false starts with shady guys when we first approached our kitchen project, working with someone who's basically honest and fixes his mistakes counts for an awful lot. But after reading your comments, I think I lean toward the contractor who's worked with our architect. They've done everything from custom new builds and seem to specialize in additions, kitchens, baths, etc. Our project would be squarely within their usual competencies. Plus the relationship with our architect. Plus a lower starting cost (because we all know the price will only go up once the work gets started.)...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
