Any idea on how i can make this look nicer. its in my kitchen which is random and its just big and ugly

Paint does wonders. There is also rambio limewash. Looks like paint but it allows the bricks to breathe I guess. Ive heard great things and plan on using it dor exterior brick. for my fireplace I primed the brick first with two coats of Kilz and then one coat of paint. such a huge difference it made. Our moms thought we were crazy to paint the brick. Now they are in awe and cant believe the transformation it made.

I would tile that inner wall area around the firebox. Make it look a bit more like a real fireplace. You could use brick, or stone, or tile. No painting in that area, it just doesnt look right, regardless of color

Just so people are on the same page, it looks more like a wood burning fireplace with a gas log in it. Much different than a gas fireplace when it comes to building codes. And yes, remove the stone as others have suggested.
